Winter jobs that make spring care easier

Winter gives you time to check supplies, measure growing areas and choose fertilizers for the coming season. Begin with the lawn, berry beds, fruit trees, flowers and vegetable beds already in your garden. List houseplants, seedlings and crops in heated greenhouses separately. Each group needs its own application timing, method and quantity.

You can prepare a purchase ahead of time and feed plants when conditions are suitable. A winter shopping list helps you avoid buying a product you already have or overlooking the pack size needed for planting. Browse products for your crops, read their instructions and base the order on your actual requirements.

Start with your planting and supplies list

Review last season's notes and photographs. Separate established areas from new planting projects. A new lawn needs its sowing area measured; berry bushes may need a plant count. For containers, note the size and condition of each group. These measurements cannot all be replaced with a rough estimate of the whole garden.

  • Record the crop, its growing location and the job you are planning.
  • Check each fertilizer's full name, composition and remaining quantity in its original packaging.
  • Read the expiry information and storage conditions on the label.
  • Flag areas that still need measuring, plants that need counting or soil that needs testing.
  • Separate spring purchases from products needed for actively growing indoor plants.

Use My garden to divide your growing spaces into zones. Names such as “lawn beside the house” and “new strawberry bed” make calculations easier to revisit. Update measurements if your planting plan changes before ordering.

Consider your location and actual conditions

For a garden in Ukraine, the month alone does not determine readiness. Check snow, frozen ground, excess water, exposure and the plant's actual development. An open field, sheltered courtyard and heated greenhouse can need different plans within the same region. Your region helps describe the setting, but does not supply an automatic feeding date.

Leave room in your seasonal list for another look before application. If water remains in a low area or the root zone is still cold, address the growing conditions first. Receiving a fertilizer order does not mean it must be used that day.

Choose products for the garden, lawn and flowers

Lawns and conifers

For spring lawn care, decide whether you are sowing new grass, restoring growth or maintaining an established lawn. The lawn fertilizer instructions distinguish these tasks. Measure the grass area itself, excluding paths and flower beds, then check how much of the relevant product you already have.

For conifers, list the plants and their sizes. A young planting and a mature plant should not receive the same calculation simply because they stand together. Planning the purchase in winter gives you time to compare packaging before the relevant care stage begins.

Berries, fruit trees and vines

Separate young plantings, established bushes and fruit trees. The blueberry range includes separate nutrient complexes for the first and second-to-third feedings. Choose for the relevant stage rather than combining them into a winter treatment. For strawberries, other berries and grapes, start with the crop and the product's full instructions.

Keep calculations for different berry areas separate. A strawberry bed's area cannot automatically stand in for the requirements of a row of bushes. Browse berry fertilizers and compare suitable options by composition, application method and packaging.

Flowers and ornamental planting

For roses, peonies, lavender, hydrangeas and other flowers, distinguish existing plants from planned additions. In the flower fertilizer selection, check the intended use and plant group in the instructions. Buy several different products for one flower bed only when each has a separate, justified purpose.

Prepare seedlings, vegetable beds and the greenhouse

Before buying seeds and fertilizers, list your vegetables, potatoes, melon crops and herbs. Decide where they will grow, the future planting area and how many seedlings you need. Work out sowing timing for the particular crop and planting conditions. Late winter is not a universal signal to put every crop on the windowsill.

Prepare clean containers with drainage, suitable growing media and lighting before sowing. Check whether the mix already contains nutrients. In the vegetable fertilizer range, compare products for the plant and its stage. Having a bottle ready is not a reason to add fertilizer at every watering.

The range also includes a fertilizer for hydroponics and soil. Check your specific application method: a root-feeding instruction for substrate is not automatically a nutrient recipe for every hydroponic system. When discussing a purchase, state the crop, its development stage and the growing method.

Houseplant care during winter

First establish whether the plant is healthy and actively growing. Lower light can reduce its need for feeding. A yellow leaf alone does not identify a fertilizer dose: review watering, light and conditions beside the window. Do not put resting plants on an automatic feeding calendar.

The instructions for the houseplant fertilizer state: “In winter, reduce the concentration of fertilizer.” If feeding is appropriate, clarify the winter concentration before preparing a solution. Visit the indoor plant fertilizer selection to check intended use, full instructions and packaging for your collection.

Pack sizes and buying before the season

Calculate requirements from the selected product's instructions before comparing packs. Use the required area or plant count for the zone and retain the stated units when preparing a solution. A remainder of another fertilizer cannot simply be deducted: its identity, composition and application method must match the planned job.

Compare the total purchase cost, number of packs and remainder after use. A larger pack makes sense when it meets your requirements and you can store it correctly. You can bring several crops into one order while keeping their individual calculations separate.

For a farm, prepare field areas, crop details, test results and previous applications. The range covers mineral and organo-mineral fertilizers, liquid products and options for larger orders. Specify the actual product, packaging, quantity and delivery destination when requesting a quotation. Agree price, availability, delivery and any preseason ordering arrangements with the DÜNGER team before payment.

Store your purchase until spring

Keep fertilizers in their original, labelled packaging. Protect them from precipitation and moisture, following the conditions for each product. For liquids, check the permitted storage temperature on the label before leaving a bottle in an unheated building. One product's conditions do not apply automatically to the rest.

Keep an inventory of names and remaining quantities. If a label is missing, the pack is damaged or storage conditions are uncertain, clarify whether the product is suitable for use. Reconcile your list with the supplies actually present before placing a spring order.

Your spring preparation checklist

Choose one upcoming task and split it into manageable steps. For seedlings, list the crops, container space, growing mix, lighting and future nutrition. For the lawn, confirm the area, decide between sowing and established-grass care, check equipment and calculate packs.

For blueberries, record bush numbers, age, earlier applications and products for the appropriate stages. For flowers, list existing perennials and new planting. Tick off preparation jobs, then reassess the plants before feeding. A checklist helps organise the season; it does not mean every task belongs on the same day.

Questions about winter preparation

Can fertilizer be spread over snow for spring?

This risks losing nutrients with meltwater. Plan application around soil conditions and the product instructions. You can measure the area, choose a suitable fertilizer and arrange the purchase now.

Does every plant need a separate product?

Not necessarily. A universal fertilizer can suit several groups covered by its instructions. Check the relevant recommendation for each crop and do not transfer a rate from a different formulation.

Can leftover autumn fertilizer be used in spring?

Check its identity, composition, intended use and application conditions first. Do not substitute it solely because some remains. Also confirm appropriate storage and an unexpired product.

What should I prepare for a preseason order?

Gather crop and product names, area or plant count, packaging, destination and the desired delivery period. Contact the DÜNGER team to discuss arrangements. Check quantity and the order total again before final confirmation.
