Three Groups of Vegetables - Three Feeding Approaches

Vegetable fertilizers are never 'one size fits all' - different crops have fundamentally different nutrient requirements. Garden vegetables are divided into three groups:

• Leafy greens (lettuce, cabbage, spinach, chard, dill, parsley) - nitrogen N dominates. Rapid leaf mass growth, bright green color, tender juicy texture. N feeding every 2-3 weeks.
• Root vegetables (carrot, beet, radish, turnip, parsnip, celeriac) - phosphorus P and potassium K dominate. Excess nitrogen produces forked roots, poor storage and watery flavor. MgO is a critical micronutrient for sugar accumulation in root vegetables.
• Fruiting vegetables (tomato, pepper, cucumber, zucchini, squash, corn) - complex needs: N at start, P+K at flowering, Ca+K during fruit fill. Boron (B) is critical for fruit set.

Most garden crops grow well at soil pH 6.0-7.0. Below this range, phosphorus uptake is blocked - even well-applied P remains inaccessible to the plant. Cabbage and beet tolerate pH up to 7.0-7.5.

Fertilizers for Leafy Greens: Cabbage, Lettuce, Spinach

Leafy crops are the simplest group to feed: they need a stable nitrogen supply throughout the growing season. However, excess N without adequate P and K produces loose leaf structure, reduces disease resistance and shortens storage life.

DÜNGER Universal (SKU 1) - formula N12-P15-K15-S15 - is an ideal starter for all leafy crops. Balanced NPK with S15% provides dark green leaf color and dense head formation in cabbage. Rate for leafy greens: 25-30 g/m² in spring when preparing beds, plus 20 g per 10 L watering solution every 2-3 weeks during growth.

Cabbage is especially demanding for boron (B) during head formation - B deficiency causes darkening of the inner core ('hollow heart' disease). Foliar spray with boric acid 1 g/10 L at the 6-8 leaf stage prevents this defect.

Fertilizers for Root Vegetables: Carrot, Beet, Radish

Root vegetables are a special group: they accumulate nutrients in the underground part, and the element balance directly determines shape, size, flavor and storage life. The most common mistake is applying too high a nitrogen dose. Carrots with excess N produce branched, hairy roots without flavor. Beets develop a bulky texture with coarse taste.

DÜNGER Root Vegetable (SKU 14) - formula N10-P10-K12-S11-MgO0.5 - is optimal for this group. Phosphorus P10 stimulates deep rooting and early root development. Potassium K12 increases sugar content and tissue density - carrots and beets become sweeter and store longer. MgO 0.5% activates enzymes that transport sugars into the root and prevents interveinal chlorosis on older leaves. Sulfur S11% protects against rot diseases. Rate: 30-40 g/m² before sowing or planting, incorporated into soil to 10-15 cm depth.

Radish, turnip and parsnip have a shorter season - a single base application of SKU 14 when preparing beds is sufficient. In-season feeding is not needed if the fertilizer was applied correctly.

Fertilizers for Fruiting Vegetables: Cucumbers, Pepper, Zucchini, Squash

Fruiting vegetables have three-phase nutrient needs - similar to tomatoes but with their own nuances. Cucumbers are especially sensitive to magnesium deficiency (interveinal leaf yellowing) and calcium deficiency (fruit bitterness, stem-end rot). Pepper and zucchini need elevated potassium for flavorful, juicy fruit.

Feeding schedule for fruiting vegetables:

1. Before transplanting / sowing: SKU 1 (N12-P15-K15-S15) at 40-50 g/m² dug in. Creates a powerful start - branched root system and phosphorus reserve.
2. Start of flowering: foliar spray with boric acid 1 g/10 L - prevents flower drop and empty fruit sets in pepper, cucumber and zucchini.
3. Active fruiting: continue SKU 1 or switch to DÜNGER Autumn Complex (SKU 601, N5-P14-K21-Si0.3%) for sweeter, denser fruit less prone to cracking.

Zucchini and squash with proper fertilization produce fruits weighing 3-8 kg - without fertilizer typical weight is halved. Corn needs nitrogen N during active stem growth and potassium K during ear fill.

Preparing the Garden in Spring: Base Fertilizer Application

The most effective way to fertilize the entire garden at once is a base spring application of granular fertilizer before digging. Spread granules evenly over the surface and dig in with a spade or rotary tiller to 15-20 cm depth - placing nutrients in the root zone from the first day of growth.

DÜNGER Universal (SKU 1) - N12-P15-K15-S15 - is the optimal solution for general soil preparation: 40-50 g/m². A single application sustains most crops for 4-6 weeks without additional feeding. After that, targeted feeding for specific crops by growth stage.

Important: check soil pH in spring. If pH is below 6.0, add lime or dolomite flour 2 weeks before fertilizer application - this improves phosphorus and micronutrient uptake. Optimal pH for most garden crops: 6.0-7.0.

Nutrient Deficiency Signs in Vegetables and How to Fix Them

Garden plants respond quickly to nutrient deficiencies - if you know the symptoms, the problem can be resolved in 7-10 days:

• Pale, yellowish leaves throughout the plant - nitrogen (N) deficiency. Urgent feeding with SKU 1 or ammonium nitrate 10 g/10 L.
• Purple tint on leaves (especially undersides) - phosphorus deficiency. Common when soil temperature is below +15°C. Resolves with warming + unplanned dose of SKU 14 or SKU 1.
• Leaves yellow between veins (veins stay green) - magnesium (Mg) deficiency. Foliar spray with magnesium sulfate 20 g/10 L. Most common in cucumbers and peppers on light sandy soils.
• Brown leaf edges - potassium (K) deficiency. Unplanned dose of SKU 601 or SKU 14.
• Fruit tip rot / bitter cucumbers / cabbage 'hollow heart' - calcium or boron deficiency. Ca: calcium nitrate 10 g/10 L. B: boric acid 1 g/10 L foliar.
• Deformed, yellowed new leaves - iron (Fe) or manganese (Mn) deficiency, most common when pH exceeds 7.0. Soil acidification and foliar spray with chelated iron or manganese.
