What Conifers Need for Emerald Color and Healthy Growth

Thuja, spruce, juniper and false cypress are evergreen plants that absorb nutrients more slowly than deciduous species, but are very sensitive to elemental imbalances. Yellowing or browning needles, absent growth, sparse crown - these are most often fertilization problems, not disease.

Optimal soil pH for conifers is 4.5-6.0 - significantly more acidic than for most other garden plants. Above pH 6.5, iron and magnesium become insoluble and needles yellow even with adequate fertilizer doses. Check soil pH before fertilizing and acidify with peat or ammonium sulfate if needed.

Of all elements, magnesium (Mg) is most critical for conifers. It is part of the chlorophyll molecule and delivers the deep emerald green color of thuja and spruce. Mg deficiency is the leading cause of yellowing. Sulfur (S) maintains needle turgidity and prevents browning. Calcium (CaO) supports root development in acidic soil.

Spring Fertilization: April and the First Growth Weeks

Apply the first conifer feed in April when the soil has thawed and warmed to +5-7°C. Plants are coming out of dormancy and need nitrogen for winter recovery and new growth stimulation. Magnesium and sulfur in SKU 39 immediately restore needle color that may have yellowed slightly over winter.

Spring application rate for DÜNGER Conifer Complex (SKU 39): 30-50 g per m² of the root zone (crown projection area). Spread granules evenly - do not place them against the trunk. Water thoroughly after application - at least 10-15 L per plant. Never apply to dry soil: concentrated salts will burn the shallow surface roots typical of conifers.

After 45-60 days (May-June), repeat at the same rate. This sustains active growth and rich needle color throughout the season. Maximum 3 applications per season - excess nitrogen causes soft rapid growth that does not harden before frost.

Summer Feeding and the Critical Rule: Nothing After August

The third and final seasonal feed falls in late July to early August. After August 15, no nitrogen fertilizer may be applied to conifers. Nitrogen stimulates new growth, but soft young shoots cannot lignify before the first frosts and die back - sometimes completely.

For the last seasonal feed, DÜNGER Autumn Complex (SKU 601) - formula N5-P14-K21-S6-Si0.3% - is ideal. The small nitrogen dose (N5%) still supports vegetation without excess growth. High potassium (K21%) strengthens cell membranes and raises frost tolerance. Silicon (Si0.3%) densifies needle cell walls and protects against winter desiccation - when needles lose water faster than frozen roots can replenish it. Rate: 30-40 g per m² after watering, once.

After the August SKU 601 feed, reduce watering and stop all growth stimulation until the following spring.

Thuja, Spruce, Juniper: Shared and Different Fertilization Needs

While DÜNGER Conifer Complex (SKU 39) works for all common Ukrainian conifer species, there are nuances:

• Thuja (Thuja occidentalis) - most common in hedges. Highly sensitive to Mg deficiency: older inner branches brown first. SKU 39 with MgO 2% addresses this systematically. Rate: 50 g per m².
• Spruce (Picea abies, P. pungens) - blue spruce requires pH no higher than 5.5. Above this, needles yellow despite normal feeding. Check pH and acidify with peat before applying fertilizer.
• Juniper (Juniperus) - drought-tolerant, dislikes waterlogging. Lower application rate: 30 g per m². Avoid excessive watering after application.
• False cypress (Chamaecyparis) - frost-sensitive. SKU 601 in August is especially important for winter preparation.

Why Needles Turn Yellow or Brown: Symptoms and Solutions

Needle color changes are readable signals when diagnosed correctly:

• Even yellowing of all needles - magnesium (Mg) deficiency or blocked Mg when pH exceeds 6.5. Check pH first. If pH is correct - SKU 39 resolves the problem within 3-4 weeks.
• Young needles (shoot tips) yellowing - iron (Fe) chlorosis. Occurs when pH exceeds 6.0. Solution: soil acidification and chelated iron in foliar spray.
• Browning and die-back, especially inner crown branches - sulfur (S) deficiency or nitrogen burn from excess. If manure or high-N fertilizer was recently applied - flood the root zone with water to leach the excess.
• No growth at all - nitrogen deficiency or nutrient lockout from incorrect pH. Always check pH first.

Never apply fresh manure or chlorine-containing fertilizers to conifers. Manure provides excess nitrogen and burns shallow roots. Chlorine is toxic to conifers at any concentration.
