What Roses Need for Abundant Flowering

Roses are among the most demanding ornamental plants in Ukraine. Without regular fertilization, bushes gradually deplete: shoots shorten, buds form small and petals drop quickly. Rose fertilizers are required from April to September - at least four times per season, each time with a different NPK formula depending on the development phase.

Optimal soil pH for roses is 6.0-7.0. Below 5.5, phosphorus and microelements become insoluble and the plant cannot absorb them even with an adequate fertilizer dose. A soil analysis or pH test strips are recommended before starting.

Granular fertilizer DÜNGER Rose Complex (SKU 18) - formula N12-P15-K15-S15-B0.35% - is developed specifically for roses. Spring Fertilization: Awakening and Bud Base

Apply the first feed after pruning diseased and frost-damaged shoots, when soil temperature reaches a stable +10°C - typically the second half of April across most Ukrainian regions. In cold soil, roots cannot absorb nutrients, so earlier application is wasted.

Spring application rate for DÜNGER Rose Complex: 20-30 g of granules per bush, evenly around the crown projection, then water thoroughly - at least 10 L per bush. Never apply to dry soil: concentrated salts will burn roots. Repeat the dose 3-4 weeks after the first application to ensure continuous nutrition through budding.

Nitrogen (N12%) activates cell division, accelerates leaf recovery and stimulates new shoot formation. Phosphorus (P15%) simultaneously builds the root system, improving water supply during hot summer days.

Summer and Flowering: Phosphorus and Potassium for Vibrant Blooms

Two to three weeks before the first flowering wave, shift fertilization toward phosphorus-potassium formulas. Higher P and K increase flower size, deepen petal color and extend the blooming period.

DÜNGER Phosphorus-Potassium (SKU 19) - formula P23-K30 - apply 30-40 g per bush after watering or rain. This formula improves photosynthesis, increases leaf area and raises heat stress tolerance in July-August. Acts 30-40 days, covering the entire first flowering wave.

Between the first and second flowering waves (usually July), return to DÜNGER Rose Complex (SKU 18): 20-25 g per bush to stimulate new buds. Boron (0.35%) is critical at this moment: boron deficiency causes buds that fail to open and drop. After the August feed, stop nitrogen applications completely - to allow shoots to harden before autumn frosts.

Autumn Fertilization: Preparing for Winter

In September-October, roses need a final feed to help lignify shoots and accumulate winter reserves. Nitrogen is harmful at this stage - it stimulates soft unripened growth that inevitably dies at the first frost.

DÜNGER Autumn Complex (SKU 601) - formula N5-P14-K21-S6-Si0.3% - is specifically balanced for this purpose. The small nitrogen dose (N5%) supports autumn vegetation without excess growth. High potassium (K21%) strengthens cell membranes and raises frost tolerance. Silicon (Si0.3%) densifies cell walls for additional cold protection. Rate: 30-40 g per bush after watering, once. Acts 30-40 days.

After the autumn feed, reduce watering and stop pruning - any growth stimulation is undesirable now. Cover bushes only after stable sub-zero temperatures, not before - the plant needs hardening.

Microelements and Rose Deficiency Symptoms

Even with correct NPK fertilization, roses can suffer from microelement deficiencies. Knowing deficiency symptoms saves time and prevents losing a flowering season:

• Magnesium (Mg) - interveinal chlorosis: leaf yellows between veins, veins remain green. Most often on older leaves. Cause: acidic soil or excess potassium. Foliar spray with magnesium sulfate solution (1 tbsp per 10 L, monthly).
• Boron (B) - buds fail to open and drop; young shoot tips deform. DÜNGER Rose Complex already contains 0.35% B - standard boron deficiency does not appear with regular use.
• Iron (Fe) - pale yellow-green young leaves. Unlike Mg deficiency, young leaves are affected first. Treatment: chelated iron in foliar spray.
• Phosphorus (P) - reddish-purple tint on leaf undersides, especially in cold weather. Usually resolves with warmer temperatures; if persistent - unplanned dose of SKU 19 (P23-K30).
• Sulfur (S) - slow growth, uniform pale yellow leaves. SKU 18 contains 15% S - deficiency is rare with regular use.

Safe fertilization rule: always water the bush before applying granules and after. Concentrated mineral salts in contact with dry roots cause chemical burns.
