Which fertilizer should you choose for roses?

Whether you have a single rose bush or a large border, start with the plant's size and age, the season, soil conditions and previous feeding. Rose fertilizers should meet a specific need. A dedicated formula provides a rate specifically for roses; a universal product can suit a mixed flower bed. Phosphorus-potassium and autumn formulas address different seasonal requirements.

DÜNGER granular rose fertilizer contains N 12%, P₂O₅ 15%, K₂O 15%, S 15%, B 0.35% and succinic acid 0.01%. Its instructions cover use before planting and for feeding. The rose-specific rate is 20-40 g per bush, taking its size and age into account. Packs are 0.5 and 1 kg.

Universal NPKS 12:15:15:15 is intended, among other uses, for flowering ornamental plants. It is an option for a garden with several plant types, but its flower-bed rate is per square metre, not per bush. The matching NPK numbers do not make the full formulations identical: boron and succinic acid are listed in the dedicated rose formula.

The phosphorus-potassium product declares P₂O₅ 23% and K₂O 30%, with instructions for ornamental shrubs and flowering perennials. The universal autumn formula contains N 5%, P₂O₅ 14%, K₂O 21%, S 6% and Si 0.3%; it covers ornamental trees and shrubs. A lower nitrogen content does not mean it contains no nitrogen.

Feeding roses in spring, summer and autumn

Spring: the start of growth

Check the bush after winter, soil moisture and what was applied at planting or in autumn. The dedicated rose formula is an option for seasonal feeding according to its instructions. Avoid a fixed calendar date for every Ukrainian region: weather, soil conditions and the start of growth vary. Fertilizer does not replace watering or care for damaged shoots.

Summer and after the first flush of flowers

Feeding after flowering is especially relevant to repeat-flowering roses. Before another application, check the product, amount and date of the previous feed. The end of a flowering flush is not by itself a reason to add a second full fertilizer. Consider the instructions and the plant's condition. During hot weather, check water supply first; adding more granules does not correct drought stress.

Do not automatically add phosphorus-potassium fertilizer before every flush. Its detailed instructions describe spring and autumn use. A different schedule needs a separate assessment of need and dosage, particularly if a complete fertilizer is already in use.

Autumn: choosing a seasonal formula

Compare the phosphorus-potassium and universal autumn products for end-of-season feeding. The former's autumn instructions specify feeding perennial beds after flowering. The autumn complex gives a general rate for ornamental trees and shrubs without a separate rose rate. Check what suits the particular plant instead of applying the upper limit to a small bush. Both instructions call for autumn application before frost.

Application rates: per bush is not per square metre

These rates come from the individual product instructions. They cover different uses and do not form a compulsory programme of four combined treatments.

For example, ten bushes require 200-400 g of the dedicated rose product for one application within its stated range. This calculates the quantity to buy; it does not recommend the upper limit. A 0.5 kg pack provides roughly 12-25 complete bush doses within that range, and 1 kg provides 25-50. This calculation does not set the number of repeat applications.

How to apply granular fertilizer

1. Read the chosen product's instructions. Calculate the dose per bush or per area using the stated unit.
2. Weigh the granules. Spoons and handfuls are unreliable for measuring small amounts.
3. Distribute evenly in the root zone as directed. Avoid a pile against the stem and keep granules off foliage.
4. Account for soil moisture and the application method. The phosphorus-potassium instructions explicitly specify moist soil. At planting, avoid direct contact between concentrated granules and roots.
5. Record the product, date and amount so that later feeding does not accidentally duplicate an earlier dose.

Do not turn soil-applied granules into a homemade foliar spray. Foliar feeding requires a product that specifically allows it. Likewise, do not combine several fertilizers into one dose without checking compatibility and the plants' actual needs.

Questions about rose fertilizers

Can I use a universal fertilizer on roses?

The universal DÜNGER product covers flowering ornamental plants. Follow its corresponding rate of 30-40 g/m², rather than treating it as 30-40 g for each bush. Choose the dedicated rose complex if you want a product with a specifically stated rose rate.

Can I use the garden rate for a potted rose?

Do not transfer a garden-bush dose to a small pot. Containers have limited growing medium, different watering conditions and may already contain fertilizer. Specify pot volume and the potting mix when asking about suitability and dosage.

What if leaves turn yellow or the rose does not flower?

These signs alone do not establish a particular nutrient deficiency. Check watering, light, roots, signs of damage and previous feeding. Persistent problems may need soil assessment and specialist advice. Do not add boron, iron or phosphorus solely on the basis of leaf colour.

Do I need all four products?

No. The selection offers alternatives for different uses and seasons. Start with the product that matches your task and assess any additional nutrient requirement separately. Universal and dedicated fertilizers should not be stacked as a double base dose.
