Lawn care: from inspecting the garden to planning a purchase
An even lawn starts with understanding the conditions in which grass grows. A sunny front lawn, a shaded strip under trees and a family play area experience different conditions and use. This collection covers mowing, watering, soil, seasonal jobs and fertilizer selection. It helps separate problems that are often treated as though one extra feed could solve them all.
First decide what you want from the space. A lawn used for walking and playing has practical requirements, while an ornamental area may have different appearance goals. A wildflower area needs its own management; do not automatically give it a conventional lawn-feeding programme. Plan around how you use the garden and the time you can spend caring for it.
What to check when grass grows unevenly
Mark dense and patchy areas on a simple sketch. Look for connections with shade, a frequently used route, a low spot or furniture that stood in one place. Note recent watering changes, reseeding and products already applied. A photograph from the same position gives you a useful basis for later comparison.
- Light: observe shade through the day, particularly beside buildings and trees.
- Water: check where soil dries quickly and where it stays wet after rain.
- Wear: identify regular walking routes, play areas and mower turning points.
- Previous care: record recent mowing, feeding and repairs to individual patches.
A yellow patch does not identify a nutrient requirement. If its cause is unclear, start by assessing soil and root conditions. For recurring problems, soil testing can clarify the next decision. Explain the lawn's history to the laboratory and follow its advice before combining samples from different areas.
Mowing and watering without rushing
Match mowing to the grass mixture, growth rate and conditions. Do not try to compensate for missed care with one extremely low cut. Check the blade and mower settings, taking particular care over raised ground. Distinguish damage caused by equipment from feeding problems before buying additional fertilizer.
Base watering decisions on the grass, soil and rainfall. One timer setting may not serve both the sunny centre and shaded edge equally well. Check that sprinklers work, furniture does not block them and water is not falling mainly on a path. A newly sown area and established turf are different stages of lawn care.
Watch an automatic irrigation system occasionally rather than relying solely on its programme. Moving furniture or changing a border can alter water distribution. Mark areas that need separate checking. This helps prevent every difference in grass colour being interpreted as a shortage of fertilizer.
Plan seasonal jobs for your actual lawn
There is no single starting date for every lawn in Ukraine. Weather, soil conditions and grass development vary between regions and neighbouring gardens. Inspect first, then choose the job: remove unwanted debris, address compaction, repair damage or plan nutrition. Every lawn does not need every procedure at once.
Aeration, removing excessive thatch and feeding serve different purposes. Establish which issue applies to your area. Do not automatically copy mechanical maintenance for mature turf onto a new sowing. If a contractor works on the lawn, ask for a record of completed jobs and materials so your next visit does not repeat the treatment.
Before reseeding a bare patch, consider why the grass disappeared. If people take the same shortcut every day, reconsider the route or lawn boundary. If water repeatedly stands there after rain, investigate drainage first. This gives the repair a clear purpose and helps you buy materials for the work actually required.
Choosing lawn fertilizer
Select by the stage of care and complete instructions, not just the word “lawn” on a pack. Establishment, maintenance feeding and autumn care may have different directions. Our lawn fertilizer guide lets you compare options and open their composition, application rates and packaging details.
Complex fertilizer lawn grass granular
This product has separate directions for establishing a lawn, spring care and the growing season. Choose the part that matches your task. Packs of 1, 3 and 4 kg let you compare purchases for different areas. Do not add the rates for several stages together as one application.

The instructions include a lawn-specific use. Pack sizes are 1, 4 and 5 kg. Calculate from the lawn section rather than the directions for seedlings, trees or bulbous plants.
For lawns, use after the last mowing at a dose of about 30-40 gr / m2 (3-4 kg / 100 m2).
The application of the autumn complex must be carried out before the onset of frost, since plants cannot accept nutrients from the frozen soil.
Check your planned work against the complete instructions and memo on the product page. These products are alternatives for different tasks, not a recommendation to apply both together.
Measure the lawn before ordering
Calculate the grass surface you will treat, not your entire property. Multiply length by width for a rectangle and divide complex shapes into simpler parts. Subtract paths, borders, terraces and other areas without grass. For example, a rectangle measuring 10 by 8 m covers 80 m². If a path occupies 8 m² within it, the lawn area is 72 m².
Then use the rate for the selected product and application method. Check measurement units and consider planned applications separately. Choosing several shopping months does not mean feeding every month. Save zones and dimensions in My garden to make the next calculation easier.
When to update your calculation
Review boundaries after installing a pool, making a flower bed or moving a path. A zone may keep its name while changing its area. Identify newly reseeded patches separately, so they do not automatically receive the plan intended for established turf. Retain the grass mixture packaging or a photograph of its label to help identify appropriate mowing and care guidance.
For separate areas, use clear names such as front lawn, terrace lawn and behind the orchard. Write the measurements and next task beside each. There is no need to combine them into a single area when one needs repair and another only routine care. This is particularly useful when one person orders products and another does the work. Check treatment boundaries together before starting.
Even spreading and practical pack choices
A spreader's control number is only part of the job. Actual delivery over a measured area and the spreading pattern also matter. Granule characteristics and walking speed affect performance. Check settings for the specific product using the equipment instructions. Plan passes before starting, especially along narrow strips and curved edges.
Compare the calculated requirement with pack sizes and product already at home. A larger pack does not increase the application rate. Store any remainder under the manufacturer's conditions with the original label. Do not apply leftovers simply to empty a bag. Before ordering again, check the full product name, remaining quantity, current lawn area and previous work records.
On delivery, compare the product, weight and pack count with your order. If someone else maintains the lawn, give them the full product name, instructions and zone boundaries. Afterwards, record actual usage, date and conditions. A saved shopping calculation and a record of completed application serve different purposes: one helps you order, while the other tells you what has already happened.
Keep each product identifiable when preparing equipment. If two partly used packs have similar colours, read the labels before combining any material. Set aside the amount allocated to the current zone, keeping other supplies clearly separated. This is useful for a garden with several small lawns where the same equipment moves between areas. A simple written checklist can prevent mistakes without turning ordinary lawn care into a complicated routine.
Frequently asked questions
Does moss mean the lawn needs fertilizer?
Not necessarily. Consider shade, moisture, compaction and grass density. Moss alone cannot establish a feeding requirement. Identify the conditions encouraging it before choosing the next maintenance step.
Can universal autumn fertilizer be used on a lawn?
Yes, when the particular product includes lawn instructions. DÜNGER NPKS 5:14:21:6 does. Follow its lawn section and complete memo rather than rates intended for other crops.
Does each lawn zone need its own pack?
No, if the same product suits those zones. Calculate each independently, then add the quantities for shopping. Keep the zones separate during application rather than distributing the whole purchase by guesswork.
