Why Tomatoes Need 4 Different Fertilizers Per Season

Tomatoes have four fundamentally different growth phases, each requiring its own nutrient balance. A mistake at any stage means weak seedlings, flower drop, blossom end rot or watery tasteless fruit. Tomato fertilizers must be matched to the growth phase - not applied as a single product all season.

Optimal soil pH for tomatoes is 6.0-6.8. Below this, calcium uptake is blocked - and even adequate calcium application cannot prevent blossom end rot. Always check soil pH before the first fertilization.

Greenhouse tomatoes need 20-30% more frequent feeding than open-field - every 7-10 days instead of 14. The closed system does not replenish mineral reserves naturally.

Phase 1: Transplanting - Balanced Nutrition for a Strong Start

After transplanting seedlings into the ground or greenhouse, the plant needs a balanced start: equal nitrogen for leaf growth, phosphorus for roots and potassium for overall strength. Do not fertilize the first week after transplanting - the plant is adapting and establishing mycorrhiza. First feed: 10-14 days after transplanting.

DÜNGER Universal (SKU 1) - formula N12-P15-K15-S15 - is ideal for this stage. Balanced NPK accelerates root development, stimulates leafy growth and prepares the plant for budding. Rate: 20-30 g per 10 L of water for root watering, or 30-40 g dry granules around the stem followed by watering. Sulfur (S15%) enhances nitrogen uptake and protects against fungal disease.

Repeat SKU 1 2-3 weeks later, until the first buds appear. After budding begins, excess nitrogen turns tomatoes into 'leafy' plants - abundant green growth, few fruits.

Phase 2: Budding and Flowering - Phosphorus, Potassium and Boron

With the first buds, fertilization changes fundamentally: focus shifts to phosphorus and potassium. P stimulates flowering and sugar transport to fruits. K increases the size and flavor of the coming tomatoes. Nitrogen is reduced to a minimum at this stage.

DÜNGER Phosphorus-Potassium (SKU 19) - formula P23-K30 - apply 30-40 g per plant after watering. High P and K concentrations stimulate mass bud set and fruit retention, increasing both fruit count and size. Acts 30-40 days.

Alongside SKU 19, boron (B) is critical: its deficiency causes massive flower drop and empty fruit sets. Foliar spray with 1 g boric acid per 10 L of water at budding and again 2 weeks later visibly increases the number of fruits per plant.

Phase 3: Fruit Development - Calcium Against Blossom End Rot

Blossom end rot - black rot at the fruit base - is the most common tomato problem in Ukraine. Cause: calcium (Ca) deficiency or disrupted Ca uptake from irregular watering, drought or excess nitrogen and potassium.

Calcium is not stored in the plant - it is absorbed only through continuous water movement from root to fruit. Consistent watering is therefore as important as the fertilizer itself. To prevent blossom end rot: calcium nitrate 10 g per 10 L water, root watering every 10-14 days from the start of fruit swell. At first symptoms - increase to every 7 days.

Continue feeding with DÜNGER Phosphorus-Potassium (SKU 19) every 3-4 weeks. Potassium K30 increases sugar content, strengthens fruit walls and improves shelf life. Do not exceed nitrogen doses - excess N produces large watery flesh without flavor and shortens storage time.

Phase 4: Ripening - Maximum Potassium, Minimum Nitrogen

When most fruits are formed and starting to change color, it is time for the final seasonal fertilization. The goal: accelerate ripening, increase sugar concentration and strengthen fruits for storage.

DÜNGER Autumn Complex (SKU 601) - formula N5-P14-K21-S6-Si0.3% - is optimal at this stage. Minimal nitrogen (N5%) does not stimulate new leaf growth. Maximum potassium (K21%) accelerates sugar and vitamin accumulation in fruits. Silicon (Si0.3%) strengthens cell walls, reducing cracking from uneven moisture. Rate: 20-25 g per plant after watering. Apply once, 4-5 weeks before planned harvest.

Tomato Deficiency Symptoms: How to Identify and Fix

Tomatoes clearly show nutrient deficiencies - you just need to know the signs:

• Blossom end rot (black patch at fruit base) - calcium deficiency or irregular watering. Calcium nitrate 10 g/10 L, water every 7 days until resolved.
• Flowers drop, no fruit set - boron deficiency. Foliar spray with boric acid 1 g/10 L in dry weather in the evening.
• Lower leaves yellow (between veins, veins green) - magnesium (Mg) deficiency. Foliar spray with magnesium sulfate 20 g/10 L.
• Purple or reddish tint on leaves and stems - phosphorus deficiency, common in cold soil (below +15°C). Resolves with warming; an unplanned dose of SKU 19 speeds recovery.
• Brown leaf edges - potassium deficiency. Unplanned dose of SKU 19 or SKU 601.
• Large watery tasteless fruits - excess nitrogen. Reduce or eliminate N fertilizers, increase K.
