Asparagus Fertilizers - Buy from Manufacturer Dünger
Asparagus is a 15-20 year crop in the same location. Every feeding decision compounds or accumulates over years. The golden rule: the most important feeding of the season happens AFTER the last spear is cut. At that moment the plant sends up ferns - and those ferns spend all summer loading the crown with starch reserves that will become next year's spears. The DÜNGER asparagus schedule: SKU 1 in spring and post-harvest, SKU 19 in August for crown strengthening, SKU 601 in autumn. DÜNGER mineral and organo-mineral asparagus fertilizers - granular, slow release, chlorine-free. Delivery by Nova Poshta and Ukrposhta across Ukraine.
Asparagus - a 15-Year Investment: Why Soil Preparation Decides Everything
Asparagus is a perennial. Planted correctly and properly fed, it produces for 15-20 years. Planted into poor soil without thorough preparation - it exhausts itself by year 5-6 and produces thin, unmarketable spears.
Soil preparation before planting (done once per decade):
- Deep loosening to 50-60 cm - asparagus roots reach 60-90 cm depth.
- Incorporate compost or well-rotted manure: 5-10 kg/m².
- Mineral pre-plant feeding: SKU 1 (N12-P15-K15-S15) - 30-40 g/m². P15 for root system development; K15 for forming dense crown buds.
- Optimal pH: 6.5-7.5. Below pH 6.0 - lime with dolomitic limestone 200-300 g/m². Asparagus performs poorly in acid soil: P is locked up, toxic Al and Fe accumulation is possible.
- Drainage: CRITICAL. Crown rots in waterlogged soil. On heavy soils - use raised beds.
Years 1-2: Cut No Spears - Why This Decides 15 Years of Harvest
Asparagus produces spears from buds on the crown (the underground root mass). Every spear cut in years 1-2 permanently removes one bud from a still-small crown. The result is a damaged young crown that never reaches its full potential.
What happens with the patient approach:
- Year 1: ferns grow all season, photosynthesize, load the crown with carbohydrates. Do not touch.
- Year 2: crown doubles in size. Again - do not cut.
- Year 3: first limited harvest (2-3 weeks).
- Year 4+: full harvest (6-8 weeks). Hundreds of spears per season.
Feeding in years 1-2: SKU 1 twice per season - spring (20-25 g/m²) and mid-summer (20-25 g/m²). N for vigorous fern growth; P and K for crown development.
Harvest Years: The Most Important Feeding - After the Last Spear
Most gardeners feed asparagus in spring and forget it. This is a critical mistake.
The asparagus logic after harvest:
- You cut the last spear (late May – June).
- The plant sends up ferns - feathery fronds.
- The ferns photosynthesize all summer (June – September).
- Sugars travel down to the crown and are stored as starch.
- In spring that starch is mobilized → thick, juicy spears.
Without nitrogen immediately after harvest, the ferns grow small and yellowed. Photosynthesis drops 40-50%. Less starch is stored. Next spring produces thin, unmarketable spears.
DÜNGER SKU 1 (N12-P15-K15-S15) - apply immediately after the last cut: 20-25 g/m². N12 triggers vigorous growth of a strong fern canopy. P15 supports the root system that is now actively recovering. K15 strengthens fern tissues against disease.
August: Crown Strengthening - SKU 19 for Next Year's Spears
When the fern canopy has reached full size (July–August), it is time to switch the plant from growth mode to reserve accumulation.
DÜNGER SKU 19 (P23-K30) - in August: 20-25 g/m². Zero nitrogen.
- K30: activates enzymes that convert photosynthetic sugars into starch and load it into crown buds. Each bud is a future spear next year.
- P23: stimulates fine root development - fine roots collect water and minerals for autumn reserve loading.
- Zero N: nitrogen after August stimulates soft vegetative growth that does not harden before frost → crown damage.
Autumn Feeding and Crown Winter Protection
SKU 601 (N5-P14-K21-S6-Si0.3%) - October, before first frost: 20-25 g/m².
- P14+K21 - final crown reserve top-up before dormancy.
- Si0.3% - strengthens crown tissues: silicon increases cell wall elasticity, reducing damage from ice crystals when the soil freezes.
- N5 at this minimal level does not trigger growth but sustains root metabolism until deep freezing.
Winter preparation: once the fern has yellowed and died back (October–November), cut it to ground level. Mulch the crown with compost or well-rotted manure 5-7 cm - frost protection and additional organic nutrition in spring. Do NOT use fresh manure - ammonium burn to the crown.
Nutrient Deficiency Signs in Asparagus and Forbidden Fertilizers
- Thin, unmarketable spears in spring - insufficient crown reserves. Cause: missed post-harvest feeding or weak fern in the previous season. SKU 1 immediately after last cut + SKU 19 in August.
- Fern yellowing in summer - N deficiency. SKU 1 post-harvest.
- Purple or red tinge on spears - P deficiency or cold soil. SKU 1 in spring after soil warms.
- Spear base rot - overwatering (Fusarium). Improve drainage, raise the bed.
- Chlorosis (yellowing leaves) - Fe deficiency or soil too acid. Chelated iron + check pH.
Forbidden fertilizers for asparagus:
- Fresh manure directly on the crown - ammonium burn.
- High-dose chloride fertilizers (prefer sulfate-K forms).
- Acidifying fertilizers (ammonium sulfate) without pH monitoring.
