# Yellow garden roses: choosing a cultivar and site

Find a yellow rose for the way you use your garden. Compare shape, flowering habit and winter hardiness, then check light, drainage and the size of the bed.

A yellow garden rose might be a compact bush beside a path, a broad focal point in a border, or a climber with long canes for an arch. The flowers can be equally appealing in all three cases, but the plants need different amounts of room and attention. Before ordering, decide where you will usually see the rose from: a window, a terrace, or the path beside the bed. Then look at the mature shape, the light available, the flowering habit and the experience of growing that particular cultivar through a local winter. It is easier to choose a plant you can live with when you can picture it at full size.

## Which yellow roses fit the space?

### For a border you usually see from a distance

When the bed is several metres from a window, look for a picture of the whole mature bush. Floribundas generally carry flowers in clusters, so you can see the group of blooms from across the garden. Hybrid teas are often chosen for the shape of an individual large bloom held on a long stem. They work well somewhere you can stop to look at the flower. If you want a single bush to stand on its own in a broad bed, compare shrub roses as well. Ask how far the branches spread and think about where the front of the mature bush will sit in relation to the path.

### For an arch, a fence or a small terrace

A climbing rose makes sense when there is room for a support and you can reach the canes to tie them in and care for the plant. Check the clear space on both sides of an arch. A new plant can fit a narrow passage easily, while an established rose can send branches across it. Near a wall, consider how you will reach the base to water it or inspect the lower leaves. For a pot on a terrace, start with a compact cultivar suited to container growing, then choose a container with room for the mature plant and somewhere for surplus water to drain.

## Questions to ask the nursery

- What is the exact cultivar name, and can I see the whole bush in flower?

- How tall and wide do mature plants get in conditions like mine?

- Does it repeat-flower, and what do older open flowers look like?

- How well do the bush and its canes overwinter locally, and will it need a support?

- Is this a bare-root plant, or has it been grown in the pot in which it is sold?

## Judge the shade of yellow and the flowering habit

Compare a bud, a freshly opened flower and an older flower. A single photograph often shows only the richest moment. Look at several pictures of the same cultivar in daylight, or see the plant in bloom, to judge whether the overall effect is closer to lemon, cream or gold. Notice the foliage and the spacing between blooms as well. In a mixed border, those features can matter more than the colour of one petal in a close-up. If fragrance matters, smell the plant in person.

For an arch or entrance, ask whether the cultivar gives one main display or produces further flowers. A repeat-flowering plant can have gaps between flushes. If you spend most of your time in the garden towards the end of summer, find out how the rose looks after its first display. Between flushes, it is the shape of the bush and the neighbouring plants that carry the view. For a single rose beside a gate, try to picture whether you would still enjoy its shape without flowers.

## Check the site before buying

Look at the site in the morning, at midday and later in the day. Sunshine above a roof tells you little about the bed against the wall below it. If there is a deciduous tree nearby, picture the shade when the crown is in leaf. Most garden roses need good light, air movement and soil that drains freely. After rain, see where water from the roof or the path goes. If it collects around the proposed root zone, deal with the drainage or pick another place before bringing a rose home.

A sheltered courtyard and a windswept plot in the same Ukrainian oblast can give roses very different winters. On an exposed northern or eastern site, ask local growers how well the long canes of the proposed climber survive. In a low spot that stays wet after rain, make drainage the first question. In a sunny southern yard, work out how you will get water to the bed before planting several bushes. These examples help you choose which question to ask first for your own site. The same shade of yellow on two labels tells you little about how those cultivars will cope with winter.

Mark the mature outline with string or stakes. Leave a way to reach the base for watering, check the lower leaves and care for the support. Check the corner between a fence and a path in particular, as it can be tempting to squeeze in one more plant there. Set the spacing according to the expected width of the cultivar and the shape you want to maintain. If you will be able to pass between the mature bushes only sideways, give each rose more room or reduce the number. The [guide to growing garden roses](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/growing-roses-in-the-garden) can help you prepare the site.

## Choose a young plant and watch it through the first season

If ordering a bare-root rose, prepare the bed and arrange for a time when you can look after the plant as soon as it arrives. Keep the roots from drying out while you finish preparing the site. If buying a potted rose, look at the leaves and canes and ask how long it has been growing in the container. If possible, ask to see the root ball, especially if roots are emerging thickly from the drainage holes. The condition of the plant is more important at this point than the number of open flowers on the display bench. Follow the nursery's instructions for the type of plant and wait until the soil is workable.

After planting, check the soil below the surface. The top can look dry while there is still moisture below. A young bush needs closer attention to watering while its roots become established. Direct water to the base and look at the lower leaves if dew or rain leaves them wet for a long time. If dark spots appear or leaves yellow and fall, check for signs of disease, soil moisture and air movement first. A fertilizer helps when there is a nutrient need. If the underlying problem is waterlogging or disease, address that cause first.

## Decide whether the bush needs feeding

If growth is weak, check the soil, the light the rose receives and what has already been applied. When one rose is struggling beside a downpipe but another of the same cultivar is growing well nearby, compare conditions around both plants. For a new border, or for a bed with an unknown history, it helps to [assess the garden soil before choosing fertilizer](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/soil-assessment-before-fertilizing). Use the findings to decide whether feeding is appropriate and which product fits the identified need.

When your roses need feeding, consider this granular rose fertilizer. Find the rose rate in the instructions and use the number of bushes and their condition to work out how much you need.

DÜNGER compound granular fertilizer for roses in 0.5 and 1 kg packs. Select the pack weight, check the price of that option and review the composition and instructions.

The complex is used before planting, as well as for fertilization. The fertilizer is evenly distributed on the soil surface in the root zone, or in the hole during planting. Take into account the size and age of the bush when using the tool.

Roses: **20-40 g under the bush**

Note the number of bushes and when you expect to feed them. Then compare pack sizes with your calculated need. If other plants share the bed, check the corresponding instruction for those plants separately.

## Common questions about yellow garden roses

###

Start with a compact floribunda or another small cultivar and ask how wide a mature bush gets. Measure the bed and allow clearance from the path. For a rose you can see up close, consider the shape of an individual bloom. From a window, several blooms carried together may be easier to see.
