# Growing strawberries on weed fabric: beds, openings and irrigation

Design a strawberry bed with suitable fabric, tested irrigation, accessible openings and correctly positioned crowns.

Growing strawberries through weed fabric starts with the bed, before the first opening is cut. Choose material intended for soil mulching, check drainage, arrange watering and leave access to every plant. The crown must remain exposed and roots must contact soil. Black covering can simplify some work, but it cannot correct a waterlogged site, unsuitable planting depth or a lack of water beneath the sheet.

## Distinguish three different coverings

Weed fabric lies on the soil with plants growing through openings. Water permeability must be a stated characteristic of the selected product, rather than an assumption based on colour. Polyethylene film behaves differently and should not be treated as another pack of the same material. Pale seasonal fleece placed above foliage has another purpose and does not replace a ground mulch.

Before buying, check intended use, width, recommended orientation, sun exposure specifications and conditions of use. Do not choose solely by the highest fabric weight or lowest price per metre. Allow enough width for the bed, sides and anchoring. Consider whether an edge can be opened for maintenance and how the material will be removed when the planting ends. Do not assume a service life that the manufacturer has not established.

## Resolve drainage before covering soil

Inspect the site after rain. Identify where water stands, where it comes from and where it can drain. Strawberries need drained soil. A raised bed may help on heavy ground, but its sides should not create a closed basin. If the whole site remains waterlogged, a layer of fabric on top will not resolve the underlying problem.

Remove perennial weeds and roots before covering. Level the surface, correct deep hollows, prepare the soil and check how it settles after moistening. Fabric stretched over a hollow cannot provide proper support for a root ball. Correcting a deep depression between established plants is much harder than dealing with it while the bed remains open. Do not hide an unfinished surface under a tidy sheet.

## Mark the layout for cultivar and access

Choose spacing for the cultivar, planting material and growing system. One template cannot suit all summer fruiting and repeat fruiting strawberries. Do not add another row merely because a strip of fabric remains. Mature foliage needs room, while you need to inspect crowns, pick fruit and remove unwanted runners without damaging neighbouring plants.

Mark rows and plant positions on open ground or temporarily laid fabric first. Check that you can reach the middle from a path without stepping on the bed. Include sheet joins, edge openings and the route of the irrigation supply. A useful width allows every plant to be maintained; covering the largest possible area with one roll is not the only consideration.

## Test watering before final fastening

If using drip tubing beneath the covering, lay it and test it before planting. Water must reach the root zone rather than wetting only a narrow strip between rows. Moisture moves differently through sandy and clay soils, so check tube position and operating time on your own ground. Roll width alone does not determine the number of irrigation lines required.

Leave connections and the line end accessible for maintenance, and follow the chosen system's pressure and filtration requirements. Mark the tubing route so a planting tool will not puncture it. After a test, lift an accessible edge carefully and compare actual wetting at the beginning and end of the bed. Hearing water in a hose does not prove equal delivery to all future plants.

## Lay the sheet and secure edges

Place material on the prepared surface without large folds, but avoid tension that lifts soil around openings or pulls against plants. Anchor it according to the product and soil conditions. Loose edges caught by wind make maintenance difficult and may shift openings relative to the crowns. Keep the installation manageable rather than permanently sealing every possible access point.

Avoid covering the whole upper surface with soil, which can provide a new place for weeds to grow. Plan joins and paths where soil from footwear accumulates. Inspect after strong wind or heavy rain. If a puddle appears, establish whether the cause is a fold, material performance or drainage beneath it instead of immediately cutting another hole beside a plant.

## Openings must accommodate correct planting

Make each opening large enough for planting and later inspection without exposing an unnecessarily large soil patch. The root ball should sit in the soil rather than hang on the sheet edges. Bare roots should not fold upwards into a cramped hole. If the opening prevents correct depth or root placement, adjust the opening rather than forcing the plant through it.

The crown is not a place to pile soil or close fabric flaps. Keep the growing point exposed. Check plant position again after the ground settles: a buried crown and exposed roots both need attention. Material should not trap leaf stalks or conceal the crown from inspection. A neat hole is useful only when the plant beneath it has been set correctly.

## Covered beds still need maintenance

Do not infer soil moisture from a dry fabric surface. Check the ground through an accessible edge or opening without injuring roots. A hot southern Ukrainian site and a cool rainy garden do not automatically need identical watering durations. Black ground covering is also not a separate winter protection layer above the plant.

Remove small weeds from openings and joins regularly. Manage runners according to the selected growing system; fabric cannot decide which daughter plants should remain. Inspect leaves and berries and remove damaged fruit and debris. Less contact between fruit and soil does not mean complete protection from rots, slugs or other problems. Maintain access to see those problems early rather than allowing foliage and runners to cover every opening.

## Plan soil access for fertilizer

Assess feeding needs before laying the material, accounting for previous applications. A granular product needs access to soil in the manner its directions describe. Do not scatter granules over fabric and assume they will reach the intended roots. Do not turn a soil granule into a homemade drip solution. Soil application instructions do not establish suitability for that system.

In an established bed, an intentionally accessible section may be opened carefully if this does not damage roots or crowns. Where proper application is impossible, resolve access before changing the rate. Compare options in the [garden crop fertilizer range](https://dunger.ua/en/mineral-fertilizers/small-packaging/for-garden-crops). A rate for berry bushes is not a per-plant strawberry rate, even when both plants produce berries.

## An organo-mineral option for a berry bed

Match strawberry to the berry crop area rate. This is not the per-bush rate applied to one strawberry. Use the product where needed and only where its soil application method can be followed; fabric does not change the instructions.

The fertilizer is used for the main application for plowing, digging in autumn or spring, as well as for fertilizing plants in the spring-summer period of active vegetation, the fertilizer is also used for laying greenhouse and seedling soils and soil mixtures. Apply the scattering on the site or in the root zone on loose, moist soil, as well as in planting holes when planting plants and seeds. Application rates are calculated depending on the species, characteristics, size and age of plants. Feeding is recommended 2-3 times a season.

This complex helps to intensify the development of the root system not only in the initial stages of growth, but also throughout the growing season and allows to more effectively provide the plant with moisture and nutrients. Especially suitable for use in arid areas and on depleted soils.

**Vegetable, melon, berry**: 45-50 g/m²

Pack sizes are 1 and 5 kg. Calculate the relevant treated area without paths. Do not pile granules on crowns or create an unapproved drip solution.

## Prepare a complete shopping plan

Measure the bed including anchoring and joins, calculate plant count for the selected layout, and check tubing and connection needs. Use [My Garden](https://dunger.ua/en/my-garden) for the zone, crop, measurements and product plan. Choose the planting season separately: guides to [spring strawberry planting](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/planting-strawberries-in-spring) and [autumn strawberry planting](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/planting-strawberries-in-autumn) address season and planting material. Having fabric ready does not make unsuitable weather appropriate for planting.

It is a different material with its own watering and installation requirements. Check permeability and intended use rather than choosing a substitute simply because it is black.
