Sow Tagetes in their final position with suitable soil warmth, local frost conditions, variety choice and careful seedling care.

Sow marigolds directly outdoors after the danger of damaging frost has passed and the soil has warmed. This guide concerns Tagetes, rather than calendula, which is also called pot marigold. An early date is not an advantage if warm-season marigold seed sits in cold, wet ground. Base the decision on your own site and the instructions for the particular variety.

Direct sowing grows flowers in their final position without raising seedlings indoors. It still takes time to progress from seed to flowering. If you need an already flowering border for a particular event, compare this route with buying established plants. Different varieties sown outside cannot all be expected to flower on one promised date.

## Know which marigold you are buying

Look for the botanical name, height and recommended spacing on the packet. French marigolds, Tagetes patula, generally form compact branching plants. African marigolds, Tagetes erecta, can be much larger, although compact varieties also exist. Signet marigolds, Tagetes tenuifolia, have a different appearance, with small flowerheads and a distinct plant shape. The species helps you understand the choice but does not replace the variety's specifications.

Do not choose only by the flower colour in the photograph. A front edge needs a different height from the back of a bed. Where vegetables grow nearby, allow room for access and maintenance. Plan for the mature width, rather than only the tiny space occupied by newly emerged seedlings.

## When is the soil ready?

Assess the local forecast, remaining night-frost risk and soil temperature. Around 18 °C in the soil is a useful warmth reference for direct-sown marigolds, but it does not guarantee frost-free conditions the following night. A warm surface after a sunny afternoon does not prove that the whole seed zone has warmed consistently.

Suitable conditions arrive at different times in southern Ukraine, central areas, Polissia and foothill gardens. An exposed, windy site also differs from a sheltered position near a wall. One compulsory date for the entire country is therefore misleading. Plan spring sowing for the suitable warm period after the local risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed enough for germination.

## Choose sun and freely draining ground

Marigolds need good light and soil that does not remain waterlogged. Inspect the bed after rain. Check whether water stands or runs into it from a path or roof. Correct an unsuitable wet site before trying to compensate with more seed or fertilizer. Plant choice and the conditions in the bed need to work together.

Remove weeds, large clods and stones, and prepare a level, fine surface so that seed can contact the soil. Do not work sticky, wet ground simply to meet the date printed on a packet. When considering fertilizer, include what was already incorporated into the bed. Marigolds are not heavy feeders, and a rich-looking planting hole is not a reason to keep adding products.

## Direct sowing step by step

Mark the position and label the variety first. Short rows are useful for a beginner because crop seedlings are easier to distinguish from weeds than in a random scattering. Leave access for inspection and watering so you do not need to step on the seedbed. Separate different varieties with clear markers.

- Check the packet's sowing depth and spacing.

- If the soil is dry, moisten the prepared drills.

- Place seed thinly enough to allow later thinning.

- Cover as directed for the variety and gently level the surface.

- Water with a fine spray without washing the soil away.

- Keep the variety name and sowing date in your own notes.

Do not pour a strong flow from a bucket onto newly sown ground. It can move seed and leave uneven emergence. Do not add an improvised mixture of concentrated fertilizer or household substances to the drill. Seed needs a suitable growing environment, rather than a collection of unverified treatments.

## Care during emergence

Keep the seed zone evenly moist during germination without turning it into a saturated patch. Check after wind, heat and heavy rain. A dry crust above wet soil calls for a different response from a seed zone that has dried throughout. Inspect gently rather than digging up the whole row to search for individual seeds.

Emergence time depends on temperature, seed and conditions. Use the supplier's information rather than expecting one identical number of days outdoors. If seedlings fail to appear, check depth, moisture, soil condition and seed suitability. Adding fertilizer does not make damaged or rotted seed germinate. Find the likely cause before immediately sowing another packet into exactly the same conditions.

## Thin for the mature plant

Once seedlings have true leaves and are easy to recognise, remove extras to leave the variety's recommended space. Do not wait until a dense strip has intertwined roots and stretched growth. Work carefully to avoid pulling out the plants you intend to retain. The aim is even placement, rather than the largest possible number of stems in a small area.

Remove young weeds while they are easy to deal with. After establishment, adjust watering to weather and soil condition rather than following a compulsory daily schedule. Taller varieties may need support. Remove fading flowerheads for a tidy appearance and to encourage further flowering, once plants have developed normally. These are later care decisions, separate from whether newly sown seed has enough moisture.

## Fresh seed and seed you collect

Check the packet date and storage conditions. Seed kept for a long time in warmth or damp should not be assessed in the same way as a correctly stored fresh lot. Clear origin and a variety name matter for a predictable display, rather than only the number of seeds in a packet.

F1 identifies a hybrid. Seed collected from it may not reproduce the parent plant’s appearance. Consider this if a particular height and colour matter. Keep unknown lots separate if you want to compare emergence and plan a consistent border later.

## When seedlings need feeding

[Complex fertilizer for vegetables, fruit and berry crops, and flowers](https://dunger.ua/en/mineral-fertilizers/small-packaging/for-garden-crops/29-complex-fertilizer-for-vegetables-fruit-crops-and-flowers)

This water-soluble concentrate is an option for flower seedlings. After direct sowing, do not apply a mature-plant schedule to seed that has not emerged. Assess bed preparation, true-leaf development and need. Select the seedling rate; the mature-plant concentration is not interchangeable with it.

Feed plants with fertilizer in the morning or evening, avoiding hot weather. Fertilize the seedling substrate for the first time 10-14 days after pricking out or at the stage of 4 true leaves.

Remember that the solution for seedlings should be half as concentrated as the solution for mature plants. Do not use products whose instructions specify the same dosage.

**All types of vegetable seedlings, fruit tree saplings, berry bushes, flowers (root feeding)**: 25 ml/10 L of water (50 ml of solution /plant)

The 5 L pack contains concentrate, not ready-to-use irrigation water. Consider plant numbers and the planned use before buying. Do not buy fertilizer as a compulsory means of speeding emergence. For a small flower bed, compare appropriate products by intended use, method and quantity required. My Garden can hold a zone, crop and measurements for product planning. Keep variety and sowing-date notes separately. Check the full instructions before use, including the distinction between root feeding and foliar treatment. Do not combine them into an improvised solution or a single added-together rate.

## Marigolds do not replace pest diagnosis

A row of flowers cannot be assumed to protect the entire vegetable garden from every pest. Effects of particular species and cultivars on particular soil organisms depend on growing conditions and how they are used. That is different from claiming universal protection from one plant beside a bed. Marigolds themselves can also be damaged.

If seedlings are being eaten, inspect them and the surrounding ground, identify the cause and then choose an appropriate response. Avoid unplanned spraying or extra feeding as an insect treatment. ## Frequently asked questions

###

For warm-season Tagetes, wait until the local risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. A mild afternoon does not exclude a cold night. Do not transfer the sowing calendar for cold-tolerant calendula to these marigolds.
