# When and how to prune thuja: crown shape and hedge care

Maintain thuja shape within its green growth. Assess cultivar, new shoots, access and weather before trimming, and decide feeding separately.

Plan maintenance trimming of thuja in spring and, where needed, during subsequent growth, using weather and the condition of the green crown to guide you. Do not begin with deep cuts into bare old wood: a renewed green surface cannot be guaranteed. Removing a broken branch, lightly correcting an outline and drastically reducing an old hedge are different jobs. Define the task before choosing the day, tools and amount to remove.

## Does this thuja need shaping?

A specimen thuja with a natural crown does not necessarily need geometric clipping. Identify its species, cultivar and mature dimensions. A narrow columnar form and a broad vigorous hedge require different decisions. If you like the outline, inspection and correction of individual damaged branches may be sufficient. The arrival of spring does not make a complete surface trim obligatory.

A formal hedge needs regular maintenance at an accessible size. Choose the intended height and width with enough room for access and future care. Avoid creating a shape that can only be maintained from an unsafe ladder. For an overgrown planting, examine whether size reduction can retain a green surface before setting an arbitrary cutting line close to the trunks.

## Spring assessment and later maintenance

Inspect the crown after winter loads and distinguish damaged branches from healthy shoots that simply extend beyond the outline. Choose suitable weather for light shaping and assess the start of growth. A cool exposed northern Ukrainian site may differ from a sheltered southern garden. A single date does not describe the condition of both plants.

Let subsequent growth and the desired appearance determine whether another trim is needed. Cultivars do not all outgrow their outlines at the same rate. Postpone planned shaping during severe cold or when the plant is suffering from drought. A large late-season reshaping before winter does not replace gradual maintenance under favourable conditions.

**Before starting the tool, check** the limit of the living green surface, active nests, a stable working position and any cables within the hedge. Work at height or near utilities requires suitable professional help. An available day does not remove these limits or make an inaccessible cutting position safe.

## Distinguish green growth from old wood

Part the outer shoots and see where foliage ends. The green covering of an old dense hedge may be much thinner than it appears from a distance. Maintenance trimming aims to leave a green finish. A desired flat plane is not a suitable cutting guide if it passes through a bare inner section.

Regrowth from old wood in thuja is not predictable enough to promise that a large gap will close. Do not borrow drastic rejuvenation methods for deciduous shrubs or yew. Where the size cannot be reduced adequately while retaining green growth, discuss limited reduction, a different design or replacement with a specialist. Deciding before cutting preserves more options than trying to repair an exposed brown wall.

## Young plants and an established hedge

Shape a young hedge with its future framework in mind. Do not automatically shorten the leading upright shoot using instructions for a deciduous hedge. Assess projecting sides separately while retaining the intended direction of growth. A newly planted thuja with establishment problems does not need immediate conversion into a precise figure; assess its condition first.

Walk the complete length of an established hedge and compare growth. A slow section is not a reason to cut a stronger part back into old wood. A slightly softer outline may be needed to retain green cover along the whole length. Mark reasonable limits and agree the intended height where several people share maintenance or access.

## Keep the sides in a sustainable shape

For a tall formal hedge, keep the base wider than the top so light can reach lower branches. An overhanging top shades a narrow base. Do not attempt to correct an already bare lower section with one deep cut. Identify where living foliage remains and choose an outline that respects those limits.

Begin by removing a little growth, then stand back and assess from the end and from a distance. A string guide can help with a straight top, positioned safely away from blades. On sloping ground, decide whether the top should follow the slope or have separate levels. Otherwise, repeated attempts to correct a close-up impression may remove more than intended.

## Prepare tools, access and cleanup

Secateurs suit individual projections; hedge shears or a suitable trimmer can cover a longer surface. Tools should be sharp and in good working order. Do not force a thick branch between teeth intended for softer shoots. Choose a tool suited to the branch or obtain professional help where a substantial part of the crown is involved.

Remove obstacles underfoot, use eye protection and gloves, and follow the equipment manufacturer's requirements. Long sleeves are sensible when handling thuja. Avoid stretching from an unstable support or using electrical equipment in conditions unsuitable for it. Inspect dense branches for active nests before trimming and postpone the work if one is present.

Remove clippings from the top and sides rather than leaving a continuous layer over living foliage. Clear the path and inspect the surface again. Do not enlarge a newly noticed gap merely for symmetry: distinguish trapped clippings, older bare growth and another possible problem first. ## Assess conifer feeding separately

### [Complex fertilizer for coniferous evergreens, granules](https://dunger.ua/en/mineral-fertilizers/small-packaging/for-landscape-design/fertilizer-complex-coniferous-evergreens)

Choose this conifer compound for an assessed feeding requirement, taking soil fertility, previous additions and plant condition into account. Clipping alone does not call for another portion. The full method distinguishes planting from growth-season use; do not add alternative calculation methods together.

DÜNGER compound mineral fertilizer in granules for conifers and evergreens. Choose 1, 3 or 4 kg packs to match the amount of product you need.

**When planting plants**
As the main fertilizer, it is used in the spring when planting and feeding plants. The granules are spread over moist soil. The application rate is calculated depending on the maturity and size of the plants: for young plants - 50-60 g/plant, and for mature 60-200 g/plant.

**During the growing season**
It is applied superficially on wet soil with subsequent loosening. Fertilization is carried out 1-2 times during the growing season, depending on soil fertility and agro-climatic conditions. With surface application of 50-200 g/plant, or for every 10 cm of conifer height, 5 g of fertilizer evenly around the stem circle.

It is necessary to feed dwarf varieties with extreme care, and apply fertilizers according to the size of the plants, it is important not to "overfeed", because they can lose their dwarfness.

Compare 1, 3 and 4 kg packs by the mass needed. Bottles and canisters also contain granules. Check the selected option and ordering conditions, or compare [conifer fertilizers](https://dunger.ua/en/conifer-fertilizers). Extra product does not restore removed wood.

## Aftercare and future planning

Check plant condition and root-zone moisture according to the weather. Feeding is a separate need-based decision, not a compulsory payment for every trim. For detailed feeding choices, see [feeding thuja in gardens and containers](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/feeding-thuja-garden-and-containers). My Garden lets you specify zones, crops, measurements and a product plan. Avoid including the same plant several times when calculating a purchase.

For the next maintenance visit, identify which part genuinely extends beyond the outline rather than assuming the whole hedge needs equal removal. Check access again as plants grow. Choosing a manageable height from the start makes future work easier to organise; a dense appearance should not depend on cuts made from an unstable position or from inside an entangled crown.

## Questions about pruning thuja

###

Not without inspecting its green covering and structure. The proposed line may pass through bare old wood, and regrowth is uncertain. Significant reduction needs an individual decision before cutting, including whether the design or plants should change. A straight guide is not evidence that the chosen depth is suitable.
