Take cuttings from an identified highbush blueberry, prepare a rooting medium, check new roots and acclimate the young plants.

You can propagate cultivated highbush blueberries from stem cuttings taken from a healthy plant. A rooted cutting retains the cultivar characteristics of its parent. Seedlings raised from its berries can differ. In a small home trial the cut itself is only one step. Set out labeled containers, a moist airy rooting mix and a place where the shoot will not dry out before forming roots. Allow separate time for rooting and for getting the new plant ready for the garden. A date on the label cannot tell you when those steps are complete.

## When taking a few cuttings makes sense

- You know the cultivar name or can at least mark exactly which bush supplied each shoot.

- The parent has healthy growth and you can take a few pieces without stripping the bush.

- There is space to look after the cuttings away from direct midday sun, extreme temperature changes and drying winds.

- You can hold the new plants in containers if the roots or outdoor conditions are not ready for planting.

## Cuttings, seedlings or nursery plants?

Choose vegetative propagation if your aim is to grow more of a known cultivar you already have. A cutting starts as a piece of the parent bush. It has to produce its own root system before it becomes independent. Starting from seed can be an interesting experiment if you want to see variation, but it will not reliably reproduce the mother plant. Do not label a seedling with a cultivar name just because its seed came from a berry of that cultivar.

If you want to plant a bed in a particular season or add a variety you do not own, compare the effort of taking cuttings with buying labeled nursery stock. When buying, check cultivar identity, plant condition and the root ball. If you propagate at home, allow for some cuttings failing to root. A few labeled cuttings that you can compare over a season are more informative than a large tray of unmarked shoots at different stages.

## Pick the parent bush and the stage of the shoot

Work with a healthy mother plant. Avoid shoots with dieback, unexplained spots or visible pests. If the whole bush has suddenly weakened, establish what is wrong before using it, even if it is your only plant of that cultivar. Keep material from separate bushes distinguishable. A label with the source and date makes it possible to tell which shrub produced the new plant and when you started rooting it.

### Soft growth and dormant wood

When taking softwood or semi-hardwood cuttings, look at the actual shoot. Very tender tips can lose water quickly and more mature parts of the same shoot have begun to firm. Hardwood cuttings come from mature dormant wood. Handling dormant material is a different procedure from protecting leafy growth in summer. Do not apply every step from one method to the other. For a first attempt, choose one method and follow the progress of those cuttings separately.

Active shoot growth and dormancy give useful cues in Ukraine's Right-Bank Forest-Steppe, but their dates vary between cultivars and sites. A sheltered yard and a windy exposed bed do not develop on the same timetable. In Polissia, the Forest-Steppe or farther south, look at the individual bush and the conditions available for rooting. Lowbush plants and cultivated highbush blueberries also require separate consideration. A method appropriate for one cannot be transferred to another without checking.

## Prepare a rooting space and insert the cuttings

- **Label the containers.** Get a clean cutting tool, containers with drainage holes and a moist propagation mix ready before removing any growth from the plant.

- **Keep the time out of the mix short.** Hold the fresh pieces in shade rather than letting them dry on a bench. Remove leaves from the lower part of a leafy cutting that will be inserted into the mix. Keep the remaining leaves above the surface.

- **Give the base even contact.** Make a hole, insert the cutting and gently firm the mix at its base. Avoid packing down the whole container or leaving it standing in water. Air still needs to reach the developing root zone.

- **Protect against drying.** A transparent cover can retain humidity around leafy cuttings. Give them diffuse light, keep covered containers out of direct sun and check moisture below the surface.

A suitable acidic medium should hold even moisture and allow air into the root zone. Soil from the blueberry bed is not necessarily appropriate in a small container. If it packs tightly, stays wet for long periods or you do not know its pH, look for a mix with a clearly stated use. Compare the options in our guide to [blueberry growing media](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/blueberry-soil-mix), while remembering that an unrooted cutting and an established shrub have different immediate needs.

## Recognize rooting and prepare the plant for the garden

A green leaf or a bud opening does not show that a cutting can support itself yet. Avoid pulling it up over and over to check. If you use clear containers or individual cells, look for roots along the wall or near the drainage holes. Before potting on, check that the root ball holds together and the leaves remain stable. If one cutting declines or its base becomes dark and soft, separate it from the healthy ones and check whether the medium is staying excessively wet.

As the cutting roots, open its cover gradually. A move from humid air under a lid to a dry room and then into sun and wind should take more than one step. Delay outdoor planting if the root ball is weak or the weather is changing abruptly. When your plant is ready, check the site, drainage and aftercare against the guide to [planting blueberries](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/planting-blueberries). Put the label in its next pot as well, so the cultivar does not get lost when it is moved.

Compare cuttings taken from the same parent before making conclusions. A plant that grows one small shoot first may be at a different stage from a neighboring plant with several roots visible at the pot wall. Keep them separate if they need different watering or hardening conditions. When you plan a permanent site, allow for how you will provide water without leaving the plants standing in saturated soil. A garden row and a collection of pots are two distinct care arrangements.

### Keep a small batch manageable

Arrange the pots so you can check each one. A cell beside the window can dry at a different speed from the middle of the tray. If one cell dries, you do not need to flood the entire batch. Check whether its mix was evenly moistened at the start and whether direct sun is reaching it. Record a few observations beside the cultivar name, so you can separate differences in the plant material from differences in position or watering.

### Gather materials before you cut

Set out clean small pots, labels, a tool, suitable mix and a clear cover for leafy cuttings. Decide who will check moisture if you will be away. Give plants that are already hardening off a separate space rather than opening the cover of the entire batch because a few cuttings are ready for the next step. For shrubs that have established, compare their condition with the guide to [spring blueberry feeding](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/spring-blueberry-feeding).

## Feeding after the blueberry has rooted and settled

After a young shrub has a functioning root ball, has adapted and fits the growth stage and conditions in the directions, decide separately whether first feeding is needed. This granular product is labeled for the first feeding. Unrooted cuttings and recently moved, struggling plants need stable growing conditions. Keep this product out of the propagation tray.

Compare the 1 kg and 5 kg sizes and the stage on the pack. For established shrubs, check moisture, age and size against the directions. The separate later-stage product has its own instructions.

###

Seedlings may differ from the mother bush. Use a cutting from an identified parent to reproduce a particular cultivar. Work only with healthy material, since propagation can carry an existing problem forward before you have noticed it on the parent.
