Check runoff and compaction, decide whether you need more topsoil and finish an even seedbed.

To prepare soil for a new lawn, look at the site after rain first. Mark where water stands, check for compaction and find out how much suitable topsoil you already have. A seeded lawn needs an even, moderately firm surface with fine crumbs and a root zone that accepts water. Buy new soil only once you know which part of the site needs it and why.

## Follow the water and check ground levels

Walk the future lawn after an ordinary rain. Notice where water comes from, where it slows and where a puddle remains after nearby ground begins to dry. Compare the middle of the plot with the ground near paths, downspouts and foundations. Water from a roof can wash away a prepared surface even if the soil itself absorbs water. If water collects in a low corner, find out why before ordering a truckload of topsoil.

After building work, check for gravel, rubble and fill that may be hidden under a thin covering. Keep usable topsoil separate from subsoil during rough grading. Plan for water to move away from the house without directing a new flow to the neighbouring property. If the area needs substantial grading or drainage beside a foundation, settle that part of the plan before bringing in materials.

## Check the soil and look below the surface

Examine soil from several places at a similar moisture level. Loam usually feels different from loose sand or sticky clay. A crust left by rain and a hard layer deeper down can have different causes. Treat the shady section where moisture remains and the sunny section that dries quickly as separate areas. A dark surface alone cannot show whether roots will be able to penetrate the layer below.

Look at places where vehicles crossed or people walked regularly. Compare how easily you can loosen those spots and nearby soil at similar moisture. Inspect below the surface only where you know there are no buried services. If a compacted fill layer sits underneath, adding a thin cover does not loosen it. Address confirmed compaction in the root zone. Wait until sticky soil starts to crumble before working it, because equipment and repeated passes can compact wet ground further.

A soil test can tell you about pH and available nutrients. Sample separate zones individually if they contain different soil or had different uses. Ask the laboratory how it wants the sample prepared and indicate that you are establishing a lawn. Read the [guide to assessing soil before choosing fertilizer](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/soil-assessment-before-fertilizing) if you need to decide where to sample. Visible clues help you choose the locations; the lab results and site assessment inform which materials to add.

## When it makes sense to buy topsoil

### Keep a useful layer already on the site

Retain good topsoil, clear away stones and debris and level the parts that need it. Decide on a full replacement only after identifying what the existing layer cannot provide. A site with good water movement and a loose root zone may need local correction of dips and a prepared surface. There is little reason to till the whole yard for a few uneven places by the path.

### Compare a sample before ordering more

Ask the supplier for a sample and the material's origin. Look for building debris, hard clods and live weed roots. Ask about soil texture and any existing lab results. Compare the sample with the material it will sit on. If the imported layer differs strongly from the existing soil, plan how the two will meet and consider how water will move across the interface.

Use the measured area and planned depth to estimate volume. For instance, a section of 20 m² that genuinely needs another 5 cm would take 1 m³ by geometry before settling is accounted for. The actual depth depends on the base, the planned grade and the adjoining surfaces. Leave out paths and parts of the yard that do not need material. Measure different levels separately if one part needs more fill than another.

### Compare a worn strip with the rest of the yard

Delivery traffic may have crossed a strip beside the gate while the central soil stayed undisturbed. Check each at similar moisture and note the usable surface layer, rubble, wheel tracks and direction of runoff. You may need to improve only the gate strip. If you are considering an organic amendment, ask how mature it is and what problem it is meant to solve. Well-finished compost can help sandy soil retain moisture and can improve the structure of a heavy soil where it is needed. Fresh sawdust or manure is a different material. Use the soil assessment before deciding what to add.

## Finish the seedbed

- Once the grade is set, remove rubble, large stones and remaining weed roots that interfere with preparation.

- Loosen compacted spots when the soil is workable. Add only the materials indicated by the assessment and soil test.

- Rake the surface level. Walk around the perimeter and look for depressions, ruts and raised spots before opening the seed.

- Lightly firm the surface if it is too loose and check the grade again. The top should remain crumbly enough for seed to contact the soil.

Test a small section with water. It should reach the soil without a strong stream carrying loose particles into the low corner. The guide to [checking lawn moisture and water distribution](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/lawn-watering-and-moisture) can help when you set up regular watering. If the trial still leaves water against the path, address the cause before sowing. An existing lawn that needs attention only after winter calls for a separate assessment, covered in [repairing a lawn after winter](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/spring-lawn-recovery). Keep viable grass in those areas.

## Plan around the conditions on your plot

A sandy site in Ukraine's Polissia region may dry quickly after ordinary rain, while a clay hollow elsewhere can stay wet for longer. In the south, check that you can water gently if a dry spell continues after sowing. After a heavy shower, see whether the prepared layer has shifted toward a fence or path. Select grass and a sowing window for the site, the care you can provide and the instructions for your seed mix.

On a large site, there is no need to expose the whole plot at once. Start with the part where drainage and grade are ready. Keep any area that still needs work separate on your plan. This makes material estimates more accurate and helps keep machinery away from the finished seedbed. Before bringing seed or fertilizer onto the site, mark an access route that does not cross the prepared surface.

## Granules for establishing a new lawn

If your soil needs the nutrients in this product, read the establishment section of the instructions. The row below applies to spring sowing. Feeding established grass after winter has separate rates.

Spring sowing

35-40 gr/m²

The granules come in 1, 3 and 4 kg packs. Measure only the area being prepared for sowing that actually needs this application. Check the full method before ordering.

Check the existing layer, compaction and drainage first. If you have enough suitable soil, correct only the parts that need it. Evaluate a sample of any material you intend to buy.
