# Lawn care: mowing, compaction and restoring the turf

Inspect established turf, adjust mowing, distinguish thatch from compaction and plan repairs around grass growth and local conditions.

Care for an established lawn by inspecting both the grass and the soil before choosing a treatment. Mowing maintains leaf height, aeration addresses compaction, and seeding replaces missing plants. These jobs solve different problems. A change of season does not mean that every lawn needs all three at once. Identify the part of your lawn that needs attention and the reason it is struggling.

This guide concerns established garden turf, particularly cool-season grasses. A newly seeded area, specialist sports surface or flowering meadow needs a different routine. Find the name of your seed mixture on a saved packet or in the supplier's paperwork. A photograph of another garden cannot tell you the correct cutting height for your own mixture.

## Divide the lawn into areas with different conditions

Walk around the lawn and identify the sunny area, shade beneath trees, the route to the gate and any hollow where water collects. Compare a damaged strip with healthy grass nearby. Damage along a walking route suggests checking wear and compaction. Thin grass beneath a canopy calls for a closer look at shade and root competition. Feeding cannot increase the amount of available sunlight.

Look beyond colour. Check the number of living plants, the appearance of new leaves, the surface after rain and wheel marks left by the mower. Brown grass after hot weather does not automatically prove that the entire area has died. Establish whether living turf remains and investigate the cause before buying materials for complete replacement. Photograph unexplained patches both from a distance and close to the base of the plants if you need help identifying the problem.

## Mow according to growth

The appropriate height depends on the mixture, the lawn's purpose and its growing conditions. Fine ornamental turf and a family lawn used for play do not need the same close cut. Follow the seed supplier's guidance for your particular grass, then adjust the interval to actual growth. A moist, cool spell may produce much more growth than a period of drought.

Remove no more than one third of the leaf height in one mowing. If the lawn has grown too long, reduce its height gradually over several cuts, allowing recovery between them. Cutting straight down to a short, tidy finish can scalp raised areas and expose soil. Vary your mowing direction so that the wheels do not repeatedly follow the same tracks.

Use a sharp blade and equipment in good working order. Torn leaf ends and an uneven finish may indicate a mower problem rather than a need for more fertilizer. Before cleaning the underside or checking a blade, switch off and disconnect the power source as directed in the machine's instructions. Remove stones, toys and fallen branches from the route before starting.

## Recognise when mowing should wait

Do not mow wet, frosty or frozen grass. Wheels on soft, saturated soil can leave ruts and increase compaction. During heat and moisture stress, do not maintain a familiar low setting simply to keep the usual appearance. Wait for suitable conditions and consider whether the grass is actively growing at all.

There is no single first or last mowing date for Ukraine. Polissia, central areas and southern gardens differ in the length of the growing season and moisture conditions. Even within one town, an exposed slope and a sheltered hollow behave differently. Use grass growth, firm enough ground and the absence of frost damage as your practical checks. A date in November is not, by itself, a reason to take out the mower.

## Clippings and thatch are different

Small clippings from regular mowing can stay if they are spread evenly. They break down and return some nutrients to the soil. Remove large, wet piles that cover living grass. If the mower keeps depositing clumps, review the cutting height, whether the grass is dry, the fullness of the collecting box and the condition of the equipment.

Thatch is a tightly interwoven layer of living and dead plant tissues between the green leaves and the soil. It is not simply loose fallen leaves on the surface. Inspect a small section of turf from the side and compare several locations before deciding that the lawn has a thatch problem. A soft or springy feel alone does not establish the layer's depth or the correct removal method.

## Scarify only after checking the problem

Intensive raking or scarifying removes excess material but also damages some grass. Do not use it as a universal recovery treatment for a weak, drought-stressed or recently established lawn. Confirm the need and choose a period of active growth when the grass has time to recover before severe cold or heat arrives.

Try a small area first, using an appropriate setting for the machine. Collect the material and check how much living grass remains. If seeding will be needed, arrange it beforehand together with care for the emerging seedlings. Avoid leaving open soil without a follow-up plan. More collected debris is not necessarily a reason to keep making additional passes.

## Compaction and aeration

Repeated traffic, especially on wet soil, contributes to compaction. Aeration makes openings in the root zone; hollow-tine equipment removes soil cores and helps relieve compacted conditions. Spiking and removing cores are different operations, so confirm what a hired machine actually does before booking it.

Concentrate on the affected areas rather than automatically treating the whole garden on a fixed schedule. Saturated ground is not a suitable working surface. Where standing water results from levels or a drainage problem, holes alone may not resolve it. Change a heavily used walking route or provide a path at the same time, otherwise the same narrow strip will continue receiving most of the wear.

## Restore thin and bare patches

Seed a patch after addressing why the grass disappeared. Choose a suitable mixture for shade or repeated use, depending on the location. Check its compatibility with the existing turf: grass types can differ noticeably in colour, texture and rate of growth. The cheapest remaining packet is not necessarily the right match for a visible repair.

Clear the affected surface, gently prepare the soil and ensure contact between seed and soil. Use the sowing rate stated on the selected seed packet. Maintain the required moisture without washing seed away, and keep foot traffic off the repair. Measure the patches themselves before buying seed; the total garden area is not the area you are repairing.

For cool-season turf, choose a favourable growth period with available moisture. Your local forecast and the time before persistent cold matter more than a calendar date from another country. If much of the turf is missing and the underlying soil remains unsuitable, consider a fuller renovation before repeatedly seeding over the same unresolved conditions.

## Match feeding to the lawn's stage

[Complex fertilizer lawn grass granular](https://dunger.ua/en/mineral-fertilizers/small-packaging/for-landscape-design/4-complex-fertilizer-lawn-grass)

This granular complex provides separate application methods for establishment, spring regrowth and established turf. Choose the relevant stage after considering soil condition and previous applications. The instructions below do not make feeding compulsory after every mowing and are not a recommendation to apply this product in November.

**When laying a lawn**

When laying a lawn, dry fertilizer is applied to the loosened topsoil at the rate of 35-40 gr / m2

and everything is thoroughly mixed. The soil surface is leveled and slightly compacted.

**In the spring after the snow melts**

For a good and uniform growth of grasses in the spring, a lawn should be cleaned of old foliage with a rake and feed at the rate of 25 gr /m2. Top dressing is carried out with dry fertilizer, followed by watering.

**During the growing season**

After mowing, top dressing is carried out at the rate of 35 gr /m2. The fertilizer is spread over the surface of the lawn.

The 1, 3 and 4 kg packs contain granules. Measure the area actually included in the planned application and calculate the amount using its relevant rate. Do not add the three rates together for one operation. My Garden can hold a zone, crop and measurements for a product plan; keep records of previous work separately.

## Prepare information before the next purchase

Keep the grass-mixture name, the area of living lawn, the size of repair patches and details of products already applied. A soil test can help assess nutritional needs; grass colour alone does not identify a particular deficiency. Compare density and new growth in the same locations rather than judging only the shade of green in photographs taken under different light.

For water management, use checking lawn moisture and watering. See the separate guide to [autumn lawn fertilizer](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/autumn-lawn-fertilizer) for end-of-season choices, and compare products in the [lawn fertilizer range](https://dunger.ua/en/lawn-fertilizers). Start with one established problem: adjust the mower, reduce traffic or prepare a repair patch. Then assess how the grass responds. This sequence helps you buy materials for an identified task and avoid repeating unnecessary work.

## Frequently asked questions

###

A regular day can help organise your time, but actual growth and conditions determine whether mowing is needed. Slow growth may require a longer interval. Faster growth may require shorter intervals so that no more than one third of the leaf height is removed at once.
