# Feeding hydrangeas: species, soil condition and application method

Choose hydrangea nutrition by soil, previous inputs and moisture. Check the specialist fertilizer’s complete method, plant group and pack sizes.

Feed a hydrangea after assessing its growth, soil and previous inputs. A healthy established shrub in fertile ground does not automatically need another complete fertilizer because spring has arrived. Where nutrition is needed, choose a product covering the plant group, check its complete application method and assess moisture around the roots. This makes it easier to avoid using several overlapping products on the same shrub without a clear reason.

## Identify the hydrangea you are feeding

Keep the species and cultivar name from the plant label. Bigleaf, panicle and smooth hydrangeas can share a garden but differ in mature size, flowering behaviour and shoot management. A colour name on a price tag is not a substitute for species identification. If the label is missing, photograph leaves, flower heads and the whole shrub and ask the seller to help identify it before changing its care.

Also distinguish an established shrub from a recent transplant. A new plant with a restricted root ball needs a different assessment from a mature hydrangea with roots extending through the border. After transplanting, access to water and adequate drainage come first. Fertilizer cannot compensate for a dried root ball, excessive planting depth or a waterlogged hole. The selection process below primarily concerns nutrition for an established shrub rather than a way to force a transplant into growth.

## Check the need before buying

Look at the whole plant: is growth appropriate for the cultivar, do leaves remain firm in moderate weather, and is development reasonably even? Compare a shrub with its own previous condition rather than an advertising photograph of another variety. Lots of long, soft shoots after generous feeding do not justify another portion. Excess nutrition can also upset the balance between growth and the flowering you want from the plant.

List everything already added: planting fertilizer, feed used on adjacent plants, compost and other complete products. The root zone does not end precisely beneath the last leaf, and a neighbouring lawn or shared border may receive its own inputs. Account for these previous applications instead of stacking complete programmes from every packet. If you cannot remember the earlier product, find its packaging or order details before choosing the next one.

- Good growth and known previous feeding: assess whether additional nutrients are needed at all.

- Weak growth in poor soil: check moisture, root conditions and soil-test information.

- Wilting after heat or a shrub standing in wet ground: address water and drainage first.

- Yellow leaves or missing flowers: neither symptom alone identifies a shortage of complete fertilizer.

## What a soil test can clarify

A test helps separate inadequate nutrients from unsuitable acidity. Before ordering, check which measurements are included: pH, nutrient availability and organic matter are different pieces of information. Identify the planting as hydrangeas and mention recent inputs. Follow the chosen laboratory's sampling instructions for the border; do not combine its sample with unknown potting mix or soil from a different garden. Keep the report so later decisions relate to actual conditions.

The phrase “for acid-loving plants” does not establish the current pH of your ground. Likewise, yellow foliage does not automatically identify an element to add. If yellowing is the main concern, start with the separate [hydrangea chlorosis guide](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/hydrangea-chlorosis-guide). The task here is choosing nutrition once the need is assessed, rather than treating a visible symptom with whichever complete feed happens to be available.

## Moisture, position and containers

Check the soil around the roots before applying anything, rather than judging only the dark surface under mulch. A short shower may leave deeper ground dry; heavy soil may retain too much water. A dried-out or waterlogged shrub first needs an appropriate water regime. Do not try to revive it with a stronger fertilizer application. Mulch can help retain moisture, but it does not remove the need to inspect the soil and plant.

For a potted hydrangea, find out whether the growing medium already contains fertilizer. Check drainage holes and whether water remains in the saucer. A compact cultivar in a container should not be treated as a large border shrub simply because both are hydrangeas. Do not invent a conversion from a per-bush rate to grams per litre of substrate. Clarify suitability for the container's volume, the plant's age and its existing nutrient supply before choosing an amount.

## Match the season to plant development

A sheltered urban garden and a cold exposed site in Ukraine do not reach spring growth under identical conditions. Follow the plant's renewed growth, soil condition and the selected product's instructions. Avoid frozen ground and conditions where flowing water could carry granules away from the roots. During autumn and winter dormancy, do not restart a spring-and-summer programme because of one warm afternoon or because fertilizer remains in an open bag.

A reference to spring pruning in an application method does not mean every hydrangea should receive the same pruning. Species and cultivar determine which shoots should be retained. If an otherwise healthy shrub fails to flower, investigate [reasons hydrangeas fail to flower](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/hydrangea-not-flowering) separately. Additional complete fertilizer cannot replace flower buds already removed or reverse frost injury. Keep the decision about feeding separate from a decision to cut branches.

## A specialist complex when nutrition is needed

### [Complex fertilizer for hydrangea, rhododendron, azalea granular](https://dunger.ua/en/mineral-fertilizers/small-packaging/for-landscape-design/20-complex-fertilizer-for-hydrangea-rhododendron-azalea)

The complex covers hydrangeas in the stated group. The complete method and group rate below require consideration of shrub size and age. Do not transfer the rate to litres of substrate or another formulation.

The complex is used in spring and summer, before planting shrubs, as well as for fertilization. The fertilizer is evenly distributed on the soil surface along the stem circle of the plant, departing from it by 15-20 cm or added to the hole during planting. The application rate is determined taking into account the size and age of the bush. The soil should be moist during fertilization. The first feeding is recommended immediately after waking up (after the snow melts), when the shoots appear after spring pruning; subsequent feeding at the beginning of budding.

Feeding should be carried out in the morning or evening, when the sun is not so active, or during the day in cloudy weather. If a good rain has passed recently, the ground is quite wet, then there is no point in watering. In general, it is desirable to shed the earth at least a couple of hours, and even better the day before fertilization.

It is important not to overfeed the plants, as they can actively increase the vegetative mass, and flowering will not be long, abundant and bright.

**Hydrangea, azalea, rhododendron, etc. (calmia, heather, erica, camellia)**: 30≥ g/bush

Pack sizes: 0.5, 1 and 5 kg. Choose it for nutrition, without a guarantee of blue flowers or treatment of every yellowing problem. Clarify application for the individual shrub and earlier inputs; do not stack separate feeding programmes.

## Prepare the application without unnecessary mixtures

Have the packet, a suitable measure for dry granules and your list of earlier inputs ready before starting. Identify the root area and applicable method first, then measure the fertilizer. Do not estimate with a random spoon: different granules have different bulk densities. Return the remainder to its labelled package after use and follow the storage conditions printed on it, keeping it away from food and out of reach of children.

Do not add another complete fertilizer, a pH-changing treatment or a homemade mixture without a separate reason for each. These are different decisions. If you need advice about an amount for the shrub's size, provide its approximate dimensions, age, growing conditions and the names of products already used. These details are more useful than asking for one quantity that should suit every hydrangea regardless of its situation.

## Questions about feeding hydrangeas

###

There is no automatic requirement based solely on the calendar. Assess growth, soil and previous inputs. A fertile border may already provide enough; a poor site deserves assessment using soil information and growing conditions. Do not increase frequency simply because foliage is large but flowers are disappointing. Investigate the flowering problem independently before making nutrition the assumed cause.
