# Feeding boxwood: how to tell if your hedge needs it

Check the hedge after winter, investigate root conditions and choose a product only where the planting has an established need.

When a boxwood border turns pale, begin by looking at where the change occurred. Orange foliage on the sunny face after winter, weak shrubs below a downpipe and spots spreading from one branch to another are different observations. A bag of fertilizer does not answer any of them. Feeding has a place when an assessment shows what the plant needs and the roots are in a condition to use it. Examine the hedge in sections before buying enough for the full length.

## Walk the border before choosing a feed

Look at both faces and the top of the hedge. Part the outer foliage to see the older leaves and inner branches, then look again at the tips. Is the change on the exposed side only? Does it start at the lowest point of the bed? Is there an abrupt boundary where paving begins? Mark the affected sections with a photo or a simple sketch. Comparing one patch of discoloured leaves with a healthy plant under similar conditions is more useful than comparing it with an unrelated plant in another part of the garden.

Look at the whole plant before interpreting one leaf. Some older inner leaves are shed as part of normal turnover, even on an evergreen. Pay particular attention when whole shoots are declining, new leaves are unusually pale or affected sections are growing in number. These observations help you describe the problem, but they are still clues. Even a real nutrient shortage in the leaf does not establish that the soil itself lacks that nutrient.

### Start with four checks

- Mark sections near downpipes, paving, open corners and sheltered walls.

- Compare new growth, older foliage and the inside of the canopy.

- Check moisture underneath the mulch and look at the base of the stems.

- Write down recent fertilizer, irrigation and changes in soil level before sampling.

## Pause the purchase if the cause is unclear

Orange leaves on an exposed face, weak growth near a downpipe and rapid leaf drop call for different checks. Use [why boxwood yellows and how to inspect the shrub](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/yellowing-boxwood-diagnosis) for the detailed inspection. If the tissue between veins is distinctly pale, see how to investigate yellowing between leaf veins. These observations help describe the symptom, but they do not establish a need for a compound fertilizer.

For the feeding decision, set aside any shrubs with possible winter or root injury first. Inspect exposed shoots as the planting comes out of winter and see whether the low end remains wet after rain. Examine the surface gently because boxwood roots are fairly shallow. If spots, dying shoots or leaf loss are spreading, seek a diagnosis before treating the hedge.

## Get a soil result you can use

Tell the laboratory that the planting is boxwood and ask what measurements it recommends for a shrub border. Soil pH and nutrient measurements can help distinguish a genuine shortage from difficulty taking up nutrients. Mention previous applications and any changes to soil level. Follow the laboratory's sampling instructions. If a healthy end of the hedge is in different soil from a declining end, keep the samples separately labelled so the result can help you understand the difference.

Soil pH affects nutrient availability. A plant can struggle to obtain an element even where it is present in the soil. Likewise, poor root conditions can interfere with uptake. Do not add lime or sulfur by guesswork. Discuss whether a change is appropriate for the specific soil, measured result and planting. For a practical approach to describing the site and separating different beds, see [the guide to assessing soil before choosing fertilizer](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/soil-assessment-before-fertilizing).

## Choose a product only for an established need

Record the nutrient that is actually needed, the section where the issue has been confirmed and what you found about drainage and rooting. If the report already shows an adequate supply of certain nutrients, a compound fertilizer containing those nutrients may be a poor fit. Compare the complete composition and instructions with the findings. Where water stands around the roots, work on those conditions before revisiting a fertilizer purchase.

Do not give a newly moved shrub the same treatment as a vigorous, established hedge solely because they share a name. Newly disturbed roots need attention to their growing conditions. A healthy established hedge does not need a feed simply because it has been trimmed. Look at past applications, including fertilizer that may already have reached the border from a neighbouring bed.

Measure the strip you intend to treat. Exclude paths and adjacent plants with different requirements. A rate per area is calculated from that area, not from the number of stems. A rate per plant belongs to the specific group and situation described in the instructions. This distinction matters when a tightly clipped hedge of several plants looks like one continuous unit. Start with the treated area or plant count required by the product, then choose a pack size based on the resulting quantity.

### Compare the recommendation with the whole formulation

Where the laboratory raises a question about pH while nutrient levels are adequate, a compound fertilizer does not answer that question. If only one nutrient is deficient, compare the other ingredients and ask whether the recommendation calls for all of them. The word “universal” describes a product's range of uses. It does not describe the needs of a particular plant. For a repeat purchase, find the previous order or pack and check the complete product name and composition.

Count only the shrubs covered by the recommendation. Suppose samples show a need in a few plants at one end of the border. Exclude the rest from the calculation. If the total mass needed is small, compare the smaller pack with any usable quantity of the same product you already have. If the amount is larger, compare the total weight and the number of packs needed. Leftover product is no reason to extend an application to healthy shrubs.

Record which shrubs received the application. On your next inspection, compare new growth with that on the adjacent part of the hedge and check whether irrigation or the site has changed. If the symptoms are still progressing, revisit the diagnosis before repeating an application. It may be useful to clarify the report with the laboratory or get a closer look at the roots with professional help.

## Granules for perennial shrubs

### [Organo-mineral fertilizer for all types of crops granular](https://dunger.ua/en/mineral-fertilizers/small-packaging/for-garden-crops/26-organo-mineral-fertilizer-for-all-types-of-crops)

Consider this product when the assessment establishes a need and its composition suits the recommendation. Its instructions include a separate row for perennial trees and shrubs. Check the relevant application conditions and units before buying.

DÜNGER organo-mineral fertilizer granules for all types of crops. Available pack sizes: 1 and 5 kg. Select a pack, check its price and availability, and place an order for delivery within Ukraine.

For this row, count only the shrubs that need feeding. The rate is per shrub. Choose the pack size from the total mass of granules needed for those plants.

## Two gardens with the same pale colour

At one property, the outer surface facing a terrace turns pale after winter while foliage inside the hedge stays green. The end behind the corner of a wall is unaffected. The gardener compares exposed and sheltered growth, checks whether shoots are alive and waits for the soil to become suitable for inspection. That pattern gives a better starting point than a whole-hedge fertilizer application.

At another property, the low end of a border sits below a downpipe. The ground there stays moist much longer after rain than it does beside the entrance. The gardener first looks at how to redirect the runoff, then considers sampling the weak and healthy sections separately. That keeps observations about one end of the hedge from being mistaken for evidence about the other. Both examples start with a similar colour, yet the next checks are quite different.

## Common questions about feeding boxwood

###

A healthy hedge with no established need does not require routine spring feeding. Inspect new growth, drainage and past applications. If one section is declining, diagnose that section and compare it with a healthy part before treating the whole border.
