Identify the clematis pruning group before cutting back for winter. Learn which stems to retain and how to handle an unknown variety or herbaceous plant.

Do not cut every clematis down before winter. First identify its pruning group: some flower on stems retained from the previous season, while others flower on new growth. Routine pruning for many late-flowering climbers belongs in late winter or early spring, not automatically in autumn. If the variety is unknown, keep the healthy framework and observe flowering before making a severe cut.

## Why the pruning group matters

A clematis pruning group describes where and when the plant produces flowers. It is not a ranking of winter hardiness, flower size or how strong the plant looks. Two climbers on the same support can need very different treatment. Cutting them together simply because their stems are tangled can remove the next early display from one while being suitable for the other at a different time.

Look for the variety name on the plant label, order confirmation or your planting notes. Check that name against the grower's pruning information. Colour alone is not enough to identify a cultivar, and a large flower does not automatically settle the group. If you bought a mixture or inherited a garden, follow each stem to its base before deciding how many separate plants share the trellis.

The main pruning groups at a glance

| Group | Flowering wood | Main decision |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Growth retained from the previous season. | Preserve the framework; prune after flowering if needed. |
| 2 | Early flowers on shoots from older growth; some later flowers on new growth. | Prune lightly and retain healthy older stems for early flowers. |
| 3 | New growth made in the flowering season. | Plan stronger pruning in late winter or early spring. |

## Group 1: preserve the stems for early flowers

Early-flowering clematis such as Clematis alpina, C. macropetala and C. montana belong to this group. Established plants generally need little routine pruning. If space needs to be reduced or the plant needs tidying, do that after flowering, taking the local frost situation into account. A full autumn cut removes the older growth on which the next early flowers depend.

Before winter, examine the support and distinguish a broken stem from an untidy but healthy one. An old-looking woody stem is not automatically dead. Do not reduce the whole plant to a neat low bundle solely to make covering or clearing the bed easier. Winter protection depends on the species, cultivar and site; membership of group 1 does not mean that every plant in it tolerates the same Ukrainian winter.

## Group 2: keep a framework and prune selectively

This group includes large-flowered cultivars such as 'Nelly Moser' and 'The President'. The early flush develops from shoots associated with the previous year's growth, and some cultivars flower again on new shoots later. The aim is to preserve useful older stems while removing weak or dead parts. Cutting everything near ground level can sacrifice the early flowering period.

In late winter or early spring, work down each stem until you find a healthy pair of buds and cut just above them when pruning is needed. Do not choose one arbitrary height and clip every stem across that line. After the first flush, a separate light pruning can encourage later flowering on suitable cultivars. That later task is different from an autumn attempt to clear the trellis completely.

If a group 2 plant has become congested or top-heavy, renovation may be possible, but it changes the expected flowering. Treat renovation as a planned job with a known cultivar, not as the routine winter treatment for every established clematis. A smaller display following a severe cut does not automatically indicate that the plant lacks fertilizer.

## Group 3: stronger pruning before renewed growth

Late-flowering clematis such as C. viticella and cultivars including 'Polish Spirit' and 'Ville de Lyon' flower on growth produced in the current season. They are commonly cut back hard in late winter or early spring as buds begin to show growth. For an established climbing plant managed this way, cut to the lowest healthy pair of buds, commonly around 15-30 cm above the soil. Assess the actual buds rather than forcing an exact ruler height where no suitable buds are present.

Leaving these plants unpruned can produce a tangle with a bare base and flowers high on the support. That explains the purpose of pruning, but it does not mean every remaining stem must be removed before the first snowfall. In Ukraine, use the end of winter and the approach of growth as the reference stage. One fixed date is not a universal appointment for a cold northern garden, a sheltered southern courtyard and an elevated site.

## Herbaceous clematis are a separate case

Herbaceous species such as C. integrifolia, C. heracleifolia and C. recta can be cut close to ground level in late autumn or early spring. Their seasonal stems should not be confused with the persistent woody framework of an early-flowering climber. Confirm the plant's identity and growth habit before applying this approach. A collapsed stem on an unidentified climbing clematis is not enough evidence to call the whole plant herbaceous.

## What to do when the variety is unknown

Keep healthy stems while gathering useful information. Photograph the whole plant and note when the first flowers appear, whether there is another flush and where flowering shoots emerge. The relationship between old stems and new shoots matters more than the exact date in a single unusual season. Spring frost, previous pruning or damage can obscure the normal flowering pattern, so avoid a confident identification based only on one late flower.

Use a durable label at the plant base and keep a separate photograph of it. If two plants share an arch, label both ends before removing tangled growth. This small preparation makes the next pruning decision easier and prevents one group's instructions from being applied to its neighbour. Review neighbouring flower-bed conditions with the [garden soil assessment guide](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/soil-assessment-before-fertilizing) when poor growth is also a concern.

### Before making a major cut

- Confirm the species or cultivar where possible.

- Identify the pruning group and flowering wood.

- Trace stems to the correct plant base.

- Locate healthy buds and distinguish actual damage.

- Choose the appropriate seasonal stage for that group.

- Plan how to remove cut material without pulling live stems.

## Handle the support and root zone gently

Clematis stems are fragile. Remove cut pieces in manageable sections instead of pulling an entire tangled mass from the support. Keep retained stems supported, using loose ties that do not bite into them. Check the trellis while access is clear. A loose support and an unsuitable pruning method are separate problems; extra cutting is not the only way to make the plant secure.

Check soil moisture and drainage as part of the winter preparation, especially around recent plantings. Clematis prefer moist, drained soil, and a plant in a container needs separate attention. Pruning alone does not solve waterlogging or drought stress. Keep mulch from being banked against stems, and investigate persistent wilting instead of treating every collapsed shoot as proof of one disease.

## Plan feeding for the growing period

### [Complex fertilizer universal granular](https://dunger.ua/en/mineral-fertilizers/small-packaging/for-garden-crops/dobrivo-kompleksne-universalne)

For a clematis growing in a flower bed, this product covers the floral and decorative crop group. Consider it when feeding is needed during suitable growth conditions. Cutting the plant before winter is not a reason to apply it immediately. Established clematis in fertile soil do not automatically need regular extra feeding.

Apply fertilizer before sowing or planting, as well as for feeding. Fertilizer is evenly distributed in the aisles or over the soil surface, applied to rows (when sowing seeds - 2/3 g / running meter of a row) or planting holes (for seedlings up to 3g / plant).

**Floral and decorative crops:** 30-40 gr/m²

The displayed rate is for the stated crop group and an area of soil, so measure the area you will treat. Packs contain 3, 4 or 5 kg of granules. Compare [flower fertilizers](https://dunger.ua/en/flower-fertilizers), check the principles in [the phosphorus and potassium guide](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/phosphorus-potassium-fertilizers-guide), and organise the zone, measurements and product plan in [My Garden](https://dunger.ua/en/my-garden).

## Frequently asked questions

###

No. Use the cultivar name and flowering habit. Similar colours occur in different groups, and the appearance of a flower does not show whether its supporting growth is old or new.
