Learn how to sample soil beneath blueberry bushes, compare results and distinguish substrate pH from irrigation water alkalinity.

Check acidity where the blueberry roots are growing. If a bush is in a prepared strip or container, soil from the path between rows or beneath a neighbouring apple tree cannot answer that question. Even two bushes beside each other may have different growing mixes or receive water from different sources. Before changing your care, collect separate samples, find out how pH will be measured, and record how the bushes are doing.

## What to record before testing

- Which bushes share a prepared bed, which have separate planting holes, and which are in containers.

- What the root zone was filled with and what mulch was added.

- Where irrigation water comes from and whether the source has changed.

- Which leaves go pale first and whether new growth is weak.

- Any recent applications of fertilizer, ash, lime or other materials.

## What pH tells you about a blueberry bed

pH expresses how acidic or alkaline a material is. A lower number means greater acidity. Highbush blueberries need an acidic root zone with air and adequate moisture. A pH range of 4.0-5.5 appears in growing guidance as a starting point, but interpret the result in light of the test method and whether you sampled soil or a growing mix. Ask the laboratory what range it recommends for blueberries using its own method. A reading in a water extract cannot be assumed to match a reading obtained in a salt solution.

At a pH that is too high for the crop, the plant may struggle to take up iron even where there is iron in the ground. The tissue between the veins of young leaves may turn yellow while the veins stay green. That pattern is a reason to measure the root-zone pH. Poor drainage, drought and root injury also affect nutrient uptake. When only one bush changes colour, compare its root-zone conditions with a neighbouring bush that still has healthy growth.

## How to sample the growing area

### Plants in ground or raised beds

Identify a uniform area, such as one strip prepared in the same way and served by the same irrigation line. Brush aside fresh surface bark or other loose mulch. Sample beneath it where the fine roots are growing. Ask the laboratory what depth and number of samples suit the test you need, and avoid digging through a mass of fine roots. The guide to [assessing garden soil](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/soil-assessment-before-fertilizing) gives more detail on planning samples.

- Use clean tools and containers with no lime, fertilizer or cleaning residue.

- Take several small portions from the same depth within the uniform area. Make a composite sample from those portions using the laboratory’s instructions.

- Sample a weak group and a healthy group separately. Keep out soil from a path, a different bed or a place where granules have spilt.

- Label the samples with the location, depth, date, soil or mix type, water source and recent applications.

Tell the laboratory if the upper part of the bed is mostly an organic growing mix. The mineral soil underneath may behave differently. Combining both layers in one sample can hide where the roots are encountering the problem. For a new bed, the steps for [preparing a blueberry growing mix](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/blueberry-soil-mix) differ from testing a strip in which bushes are already established.

### Plants in containers

Request an analysis for container media or ask which method the laboratory recommends. A bark- or peat-based mix behaves differently from garden soil. In a small pot, avoid digging out a large sample at the expense of healthy roots. Ask whether the laboratory needs a small portion of growing mix or a liquid extract prepared by its own method. Keep a sample from one problem pot separate from the rest of the collection.

## Choose a test you can repeat

A home kit with a useful range for acidic media can give an initial indication. Follow its directions for water, proportions and timing. With an electronic meter, follow the manufacturer’s calibration procedure and care for the electrode. Avoid treating a number from a different procedure as directly equivalent to a laboratory result. If it is close to a decision threshold or you plan a substantial change to the soil, get the number confirmed by a lab.

For a repeat test, return to the same points and depth, and use the same method. Comparing two different beds, or a wet pot and a dry pot, does not establish the direction of change. Keep a brief record of the starting pH, the condition of new leaves, any care you changed and the next reading. Ask when it makes sense to retest after an amendment, since some materials change pH gradually.

## Why pH can rise after a change in irrigation

Irrigation water pH and alkalinity describe different properties. Alkalinity measures how strongly dissolved substances resist acidification. Water with high alkalinity can raise the pH of a growing mix over repeated irrigation. This can matter particularly in a small container. If you switched from collected rainwater to well water during a dry Ukrainian summer, compare analyses of those sources and follow the readings in the root zone. Scale on a watering can is a reason to test the water, but it does not measure alkalinity.

When ordering a water test, ask how total alkalinity is reported and what units are used. Label irrigation water and growing mix as separate samples. For how to choose water and check that it reaches the roots, see the guide to [watering blueberries and choosing a water source](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/water-for-highbush-blueberries). For a pH problem, check both measurements before deciding on a correction.

Consider two bushes in one raised strip on the same well supply and a third in a barrel that you water separately. You can take one composite sample from the strip if both bushes are doing similarly in the same mix. Label the barrel on its own. If one bush in the strip has gone pale, take a separate sample from its root zone too. The separate results can help you decide whether to investigate irrigation, drainage or the growing mix.

## What to do with the results

If the pH is confirmed in the target range but a bush is weak, check moisture, drainage, the condition of its shoots and roots, and its feeding history. If the reading is consistently high, ask the laboratory or a horticultural adviser about a correction suited to the occupied root zone. Soils resist pH change to varying degrees. Elemental sulfur acts gradually, and a rate worked out for someone else’s soil is not transferable. Coffee grounds cannot reliably set the target pH. Avoid pouring household acids around the bush by guesswork.

If a laboratory confirms the reading is below the recommended range for your sample, stop acidifying and establish why it fell. Confirm the result with another sample if the first was taken beside a recent application. After correcting the problem, retest the root zone with the same method and watch the new growth.

## The first feeding after checking the root zone

If you have checked acidity and the condition of the roots, and a first spring feeding is needed, consider DÜNGER blueberry granules labelled for the first feeding. The product instructions specify the bud-swelling stage. Assess pH and choose any pH correction separately. Use the feeding directions to work out how much of this product is needed, independently of the difference between two acidity readings.

Compare the 1 and 5 kg packs after counting the bushes and considering their age and size. Note previous applications to avoid doubling any feeding already planned. Check the full instructions, photo and price of the selected pack. For subsequent feedings, confirm the full product name, since the blueberry range contains separate products for different stages.

That reading describes the water in the can. To understand root conditions, take a separate soil or growing mix sample. If pH has been rising with irrigation, find out the total alkalinity of the water as well.
