# When to prune raspberries in autumn: summer and primocane types

Decide which raspberry canes to remove in autumn, how to keep a summer crop, and when to finish pruning during dormancy.

Base autumn raspberry pruning on how the variety fruits. Remove the spent canes of a summer-bearing raspberry at ground level, keeping healthy current-season canes for next summer. With a primocane variety, decide whether you want one late crop or both a summer and a late crop. For one late crop, all the canes can be cut near ground level in dormancy. To retain a summer crop, keep the living lower parts of healthy canes that bore fruit at their tips.

## Find out which canes carried berries

Check the variety name and recall when the row fruited. Summer-bearing raspberries fruit on second-year canes. New canes also grow from the base during that summer, and these are the ones that can fruit the following year. A second-year cane dies after it fruits. A primocane variety can produce a late crop near the top of a cane that grew that same year. The lower buds on that cane can produce a summer crop the following year if they are retained.

Spent sections often have dry lateral shoots or remnants of fruit stalks. Younger stems often look different, but bark darkens at different rates and colour alone is unreliable. Recall where the cane grew and which part carried fruit. If varieties are mixed, label the individual plants you observed and avoid pruning the entire row according to the behaviour of a single bush. Marking canes during picking gives you more reliable information than guessing after leaf fall.

## Summer-bearing raspberries: remove the spent canes

Second-year canes that have finished fruiting can be removed after harvest. If they are still in the row in autumn, identify them and cut close to ground level. Part the stems and trace each cane to its base, so that you do not shorten a nearby young cane by mistake. Use sharp pruners and avoid injuring the crown. Keep the healthy first-year canes through winter because they will carry the following summer's crop.

Overcrowded rows are harder to inspect and pick, but autumn thinning is not a reason to cut every slender cane. Start with canes that are clearly spent, dead or broken. Identify healthy young canes for next season. Assessment of winter-damaged tips can wait until the end of dormancy, when the extent of dieback can be checked. When deciding where to make a particular cut, compare the [guide to raspberry pruning height](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/raspberry-pruning-height) with the condition of the cane.

## Primocane raspberries grown for one late crop

When you only want fruit on new canes, cut the above-ground canes near soil level during dormancy. Make sure the late crop is finished and that a single crop is what you want. New canes grow from the base the following season. Cutting everything removes the possibility of an early summer crop from the lower portion of the previous year's canes.

Some gardens can make this cut late in autumn after growth has ended; others leave it until late winter or early spring before new growth starts. Do not cut active plants carrying berries just because a date has arrived. Consider when the late crop actually ripens at your site. On a cool or shaded plot, late berries may not all ripen before frost or colder weather. Your decision can be different for two varieties in the same garden.

## Primocane raspberries grown for two crops

For two crops, preserve the healthy live sections below the upper area that fruited. During dormancy, remove the spent tip rather than the whole cane. The lower section can grow fruiting laterals the next summer. After it produces that summer crop, the cane dies and can be removed at the base. Meanwhile, newly grown canes can bear a late crop at their tips. Look at the past fruiting points to distinguish a partially spent cane from a cane that has already completed its full cycle.

Use different ties or labels for the retained canes and for the new growth. If the tip is dead and the lower section appears live, mark it and check buds before a final cut. If the entire cane is damaged, keeping it does not preserve a two-crop system. Do not copy the method from one bush onto the next unless their fruiting habits are alike. Separate training makes the crop pattern easier to recognise next year.

### Make the cut that matches the cane

- Summer-bearing: remove spent second-year canes and retain healthy new ones.

- Primocane, one crop: cut all canes near the ground in dormancy.

- Primocane, two crops: retain the live lower portion below a spent late-crop tip.

- Unknown type: label and observe instead of mowing the row.

## Choose the day from the weather and the plants

One date does not fit every garden in Ukraine. A cool hollow or an exposed northern plot can lose its late harvest to frost sooner. In a sheltered garden in the south or close to a warm wall, some varieties can keep fruiting longer. These are site differences rather than regional calendar rules. Check whether picking is over, whether the plants are still active and which canes you are retaining. After rain, wait until the canes are dry enough to handle and inspect properly.

After pruning, check the supports and ties. Arrange retained canes so you will recognise where new growth comes up next spring. Leave room in ties so they do not squeeze the stems. Remove cut and damaged canes, particularly if you found unusual lesions. If several plants show a similar dieback, mark their location and seek a diagnosis. Pruning opens the row for inspection, but the position of a cut does not establish why the plant was damaged.

## Plan nutrition separately from the autumn cut

If soil and application history indicate a separate feeding need, this complex includes a berry-shrub group that covers raspberries. A pruning cut is not a reason to apply it. Do not copy a separate blueberry programme or a fruit-tree rate into a raspberry row.

The catalogue lists 3 kg and 4 kg packs. Before choosing how many to buy, count the bushes that actually need feeding and check the relevant rate row and application method. For plantings of different ages or with different prior inputs, assess needs separately. Pruning makes it easier to see the row; it does not change the instructions for the granules.

The fertilizer is intended for feeding both new plantings and existing ones. Apply evenly in loose areas before planting; mix with loosened soil or scatter around already planted plants.

## Keep the row easy to inspect and pick

If the row came without labels, start with the least irreversible action. Remove clearly dead or broken stems and keep canes that you cannot identify. In the next growing season, mark one when it emerges from the base, then observe where any berries appear. Organise the supports rather than shortening all shoots to one height. When putting in a new row, use raspberry plant spacing and aisle planning to leave enough room for inspections and picking on both sides.

## Frequently asked questions

###

This can suit primocane raspberries grown for one late crop. Cutting down a summer-bearing row also removes the healthy canes intended to carry next summer's fruit. If the type is unknown, postpone a complete cut and mark the canes instead.
