Inspect an apple tree after leaf fall, assess broken limbs and plan routine shaping for suitable dormant conditions.

Autumn is a useful time to inspect an apple tree after leaf fall. Plan routine shaping for late winter or early spring, after the worst cold has passed and before growth starts. In autumn, distinguish damaged branches, hazards and changes you would simply like to make to the canopy. The reason for acting determines which work needs attention now and which can wait.

## Look for changes after harvest

Walk around the tree in daylight. Stand far enough back to see the trunk and all its main branches. A limb that looks unnecessary from one viewpoint may fill an open part of the canopy from another. Look for fresh splits, damaged bark at branch forks, limbs above paths and branches that rub. Check separately for broken wood hanging above an access route.

Take photographs only from a safe distance. Use the camera zoom if needed and stay out from under any limb you suspect is hanging. Mark places to look at again. Note when you saw damage, such as after a heavy crop, strong wind or wet snow. Take a close view of the attachment and a wider one of the whole tree. These pictures help explain a problem if a professional needs to assess a large break. They also show what to recheck at the end of winter.

## Sort the branches by urgency

- **People and property at risk.** If a heavy limb is split, hanging, close to wires or able to fall onto a building, keep people away and arrange professional help. Contact the utility responsible for power lines.

- **Small damage.** Inspect a small, fresh break you can reach safely from the ground. Remove only the damaged part if necessary. Choose dry conditions if the problem can wait.

- **Canopy shape.** Upright shoots, crossing branches and unwanted height can generally wait for a suitable dormant period.

A leafless branch during normal autumn leaf fall may still be alive. Compare buds, bark and position with adjacent branches. If you are unsure, mark it in the photograph and check it later. If you suspect disease, establish what you are seeing and the appropriate time for sanitation before assuming that one cutting rule applies to every problem.

**After a storm:** keep people away from the area beneath a hanging branch and assess it from a safe distance. If it can fall, a large fork is damaged or the branch lies against power lines, contact a qualified professional or the utility rather than attempting to lower it yourself.

## Why routine shaping can wait

Leaf fall reveals the branch structure, but severe cold may still be ahead. Pruning early in the cold season can increase the risk of winter injury. For planned work, look for the end of dormancy after the worst cold and before growth. An exposed plot, a cold hollow and a sheltered garden may reach suitable conditions at different times even in the same Ukrainian district.

A few mild days during a thaw do not establish that winter has ended. Check the local outlook, the state of the buds and whether the ground and tree are safe to work around. If you only want to cut because the outline is visible, mark the proposed changes and revisit them at a suitable time. Use [the spring apple pruning guide](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/spring-apple-pruning) when deciding which branches to keep.

### Set one priority for an old tree

Choose a clear purpose: dealing with a break, bringing more light to lower branches or making the tree easier to reach. Renovating a neglected old apple usually takes more than one season. Removing many large branches at once can produce a flush of upright shoots. At the next inspection, look at how the tree responded before deciding what to keep or remove in the following season.

A young tree also benefits from restraint. Find the main stem and the branches you want in the future canopy. Note branches that compete or rub. The cultivar and rootstock can influence how vigorously the tree grows. Use what you see on your own tree to plan the work. A pruning outline drawn for a different apple is a poor way to choose the number of branches to remove.

### Two trees can need different decisions

On a young apple with two upright leaders, mark both in a photograph and check them at a suitable dormant time. On an old tree with a large limb above a gate, first find out whether people can safely use the entrance. A cracked fork changes that priority. After a hazardous limb is dealt with, review the shaping plan: its removal may already have opened part of the canopy.

## Handle a small damaged branch with a clean cut

If the break is small, safely reachable and needs attention, use a sharp tool suited to the branch. Find the branch collar, the slight swelling where the branch joins the stem. When you have to remove a branch completely, make the cut just outside that collar without cutting into the trunk. Leaving a long stub or cutting flush to the trunk can interfere with the normal closure of the wound.

Stop if the branch is under tension, too heavy or likely to tear a strip of bark. Ask a tree professional how to remove it safely. An ordinary clean pruning cut needs no routine dressing. If you see unfamiliar disease signs, check the appropriate advice for handling tools and cuttings for that particular problem before working through the rest of the tree.

## Use autumn for work that does not change the canopy

Pick up fallen fruit and look at fruit still hanging on the tree. Check the bark at the trunk base, tree ties and protection on young trunks. Clear your access route. Where there is mulch, pull it back from direct contact with the stem. This makes the trunk base easier to inspect and lets you see damage you might otherwise miss near the soil line.

Note the amount of growth made this year and the inputs already added around the roots. Making a cut does not establish a fertilizer rate. An established apple in well-prepared soil may need little supplemental feeding. Before shopping, review earlier inputs and [assess the soil around the tree](https://dunger.ua/en/blog/soil-assessment-before-fertilizing). If a nutritional need is clear, plan that work separately from the pruning date.

## Feeding an apple tree during active growth

If the soil check shows a need for this composition, consult the perennial tree group for an established apple. Plan feeding during active growth according to the full directions.

Perennials - trees, shrubs

100-200 g under a tree/bush

Check the name, full directions and the 1 kg or 5 kg option. Compare the pack weight with your calculated quantity and confirm price and availability when ordering.

## Questions about pruning apple trees in autumn

###

Leaf fall gives you a good view for inspection and photographs. Plan routine shaping for late dormancy. If a branch presents a hazard, deal with access and safety straight away. A small, reachable break can be assessed separately from the work you plan for the rest of the canopy.
